Meet Inky an octopus who is a Houdini of a guy……octopus. Unknown to me, Inky’s Great Escape: The Incredible (and Mostly True) Story of an Octopus Escape is (very loosely) based on a real octopus who escaped from tank at the aquarium. In April 2016, The New York Times published a story about the real Inky who escaped from the National Aquarium of New Zealand through a drainpipe and eventually found its way to the sea. Inky is tired of his exciting ocean life, where […]
Something IS Okay….and this is it!
WOW! WOW! WOW! I seriously could write WOW 250 times and that would be my review. You will love some of these poems and hate others. And others still you will be WTF?!?! Nothing is Okay by Rachel Wiley is one of those poetry books that you hope will be good after hearing one or two of her readings knowing that, yes of course, Facebook is going to highlight the “strong” poems, the “good” ones, the ones that will tease and make you drool for […]
You Know the Brothers Grimm now meet the Brothers Fan
The Fan Brothers are at it again. Terry and Eric Fan have created a book dealing with loss; the loss of a beloved grandfather to be precise. On the day that would have been Finns grandfathers’ 90th birthday, he builds a (not so) seaworthy ship to sail as he and his grandfather wished to do. And as the stories of his grandfather told about. But building a ship is a lot of work and Finn grows sleepy and falling fast asleep below deck. It is […]
Don’t eat that but read this!
I know there are a ton of people who will love this book. Don’t Eat That by Drew Sheneman has great potential. There is a lot her to love: A sassy girl. A not to swift bear. The high jinks of a human teaching a bear how to be a bear…. However, for this reader, there was something missing. The girl is an interesting narrator, but never came across as likable to me. She is just too bossy and talks down to the bear to […]
Walking the Dog or Dog Walking Owner?
Walk Your Dog by Elizabeth Stevens Omlor would have made a fantastic board book. Probably a lap size or slightly smaller sized. It also would be a wonderful first reader (at least a pre-level, but I would go as far as to say a level one in most systems). The lack of text does make it not necessarily a fun read-aloud, but the illustrations lend themselves to creating the story. Your child could also make up their own story to go along with them as […]
Mooom! There’s a bear in my bed……
The Bear in My Bed has some fun illustrations in their childlike manner. They are abstract with whimsical touches. The bears antics are also very “childlike” in the way they are how a child could act during their bedtime routine. The takeaway is either yes, the bear is there or (more likely) the child is telling you about himself and his feelings, actions and overall state of play/mind. Joyce Wan has created a delightful bedtime story that soon your child could read with you as […]
