First Day of School and Not all is Well!

August 1, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Heidi is a stick insect. She is like the twig of a tree: tall, long and brown. And today is her first day of school. She knows she will learn a lot and make lots of friends. However, when she gets to her new school, no one sees her! That is, until a very unfortunate mistake occurs, and Heidi has finally had enough. I love the illustrations in Twig by Aura Parker. The story I am still mulling over. I think it needs a re-read. […]

Chomp down on a good book

July 31, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I like the photographs of Alpaca Lunch. The story is very much in the theme and tone of Jennifer and John Churchman’s other books, which I can appreciate, but have always felt these stories were a bit too sentimental for my tastes. But: Oh, my goodness! They are cute and fuzzy animals! And Yeah Vermont! We rock!   The Churchman’s live and raise their animals on their Vermont farm. Each of their stories show what each animals job or role is on the farm and […]

An Old theme told again

July 31, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Pink Is for Boys has a theme (all colors are for everyone as well as flowers, rainbows, etc.) that is obvious from the time you look at the cover of the book. You see both a boy and girl painting with all the colors, and of course, pink is being colored by the boy and blue by the girl. By the end of the book the theme has become almost repetitive.   The illustrations are nice and simple but have details, too. What you need […]

A Lullaby for your little one

July 30, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This is a cozy book. It has cozy illustrations with warm colors but at the same time are cool to the eye. It has cozy words that tell a memory and cozy words that tell about the here and now as well. The best part is the family is a biracial family. However, it is not “in your face” as it is “just there” as “normal.” Yet the traditional nuclear family is there. Natalie Reif Ziarnik has created a lovely, cozy book that is perfect […]

The Stars Never Disappear

July 30, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

In Sight of Stars by Gae Polisner took a bit for me to get through. Mostly because it deals with some very tough subjects: depression, suicide, family and love. Filled with many great observations there are some clichés as well. These can be overlooked due to the nature of the story. These also help break up the tension of a typically over dramatic teenager mentality. (Spoiler) The clues are there as to why the father commits suicide, why the mother is the way she is, […]

Anne of Green Gables: A Graphic Novel adventure awaits!

July 30, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I probably should not confess that I have never read Anne of Green Gables or any in the series. I have read other books of L.M. Montgomery and even seen some cinema adaptations. But never read the original. Therefore, when the graphic novel came up for ownership, I grabbed it. Adapted by Mariah Marsden and illustrated by Brenna Thummler Anne of Green Gables: A Graphic Novel is a delightful way to be introduced to Anne (with an E) Shirley. If you have a reader who […]
