I absolutely love the illustrations in God Bless the Gargoyles. Dav Pilkey has stepped away from his more humorous stories and gone a spiritual and Christian route. The nod to a famous painting also is a neat treat. While the story is religious (the Church, the story of gargoyles and angels), it is not “in your face” overly religious. It is more of a spiritual story. However yet, it is not for a non-believer. I would have like more history of the gargoyle. It […]
Counting, naps and monsters. Oh my
One Little Monster does not stay one very long. In fact, wait long enough and you will count up to 10 monsters. Or is that last one a real monster? Mark Gonyea has created an abstracted story about how one child sees the monsters in the room start to multiple in some interesting, unique, clumsy and even stinky ways. Are these monsters real or a little boys imagination? Is this a child who should be taking a nap and is playing instead or did a […]
Boogie your Wiggle and Wiggle your Boogie
First, I am not a Laurie Berkner fan. Yet, Monster Boogie is a real treat. You do not need the music or a CD of Berkner signing or playing the music for you to enjoy it. As you read out loud you will fall into a natural rhythm of a song. You will love the bounciness to the words and will have fun. Therefore, this is not a before bedtime story. It would be great for a preschool classroom. The illustrations by Ben Clanton are […]
A simple, sweet and special story about school.
Hello School! It is our little narrators first day of school. They are nervous, excited and know they will have fun and learn ever so much. Readers will experience what a first day of school can be like. Priscilla Burris (author and illustrator) has made a simple, sweet and special story about school. The illustrations are not completely realistic, but they are realistic, too. The students have expressions that are obvious to understand just by looking at them. She does not have to tell us […]
Why are the adults the only characters wearing clothes?
I knew I had read not only Father Bear Comes Home by Else Holmelund Minarik and illustrated by Maurice Sendak, but the series of “Little Bear” books as a kid (and had them read to me). I knew there was a cartoon that I would (as an adult) sometimes catch (research for babysitting/future nieces and nephews) but when starting it last night, I realized how much I had forgotten about it. One thing I did not forget though, is why are the adults the only […]
