Halloween. There is probably no better holiday. Okay, I am not into the spooky aspects of the day, but the fun and child-like qualities of the holiday is what get my spirit flying. And, of course, CANDY! And Stumpkin has all the fun of the holiday. This pumpkin is perfect: rounder than a basketball, more orange than a traffic cone, not any bad sides! However, he has one small flaw: he has a stump and not a steam. Therefore, nobody wants him to be their […]
Everything okay, even the Armadillo
I really adore Sandra Boynton’s work. Her whimsical, quirky and bright illustrations and delightfully charming text has many memories of reading to children or just experiencing it with the eyes of a child well into my adulthood. When I saw that she had a new book coming out I was overjoyed! But perhaps I was expecting too much. Perhaps I just had too high hopes for it, but when I read But Not the Armadillo it did not live up to expectations. Sadly, it just […]
Don’t judge a book by it’s wall
Everything is minimal in The Wall in the Middle of the Book but that works for the story. Jon Agee’s text is minimal. The illustrations have minimal detail to them. However, the details that are there are quite amusing and especially telling if you just pay attention. The story is very simple: A knight thinks that his side of the wall that divides this book is the best side ever! There are no dangers there! After all the other side has lions and rhinos […]
Don’t Eat Me, Chupacabra!!!! I’m not a good snack
Don’t Eat Me, Chupacabra is one of those neat books where you might not like it but someone else will. It is funny but maybe over the top for some. The beginning reader format does make it a good book for schools. Plus, as an adult, if you want to brush up on some Spanish you can do that as well. However, as I read the readers copy there was no pronunciation guide. I am not sure if there will be in a final edition. […]
If you wonder what the Irish were doing in World War II this might answer it….
This is the Award Winner. The Dorothy Canfield Fisher award is a Vermont state award that the books are picked by adults (though I am not always sure why they were the pickers as one was a professor at my college who had no English or child background that I knew of) and then voted on by the kids. Of course, the year I did this award the “cool kids” pick won. But that is the perfect lead in to this book. It is 1943. […]
What do you do with a girl like Akaraka?
A Kiss For Akaraka is actually a 4.5. This is due to the fact that the only real complaint I have is the name of the character is a little hard to pronounce (even with the father helping, it does not happen until the middle of the story). However, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the illustrations of E.B. Goodale. The ones that have Akaraka in them especially are probably the best as her form is very unique each time and is fluid. She always has a […]
