While there are introductions to each section of the book, you cannot really read Born to Dance: Celebrating the Wonder of Childhood. This is a coffee table book for kids who love to dance. Not like, love. Also, if you have a gymnastic in your family, this could work as well. The positions some of these people get into, I do not think the Karma Sutra has invented yet! Seriously though, there is a lot going on. Jordan Matter’s photographs are delightful. You see the […]
More than the monsters get undressed
“Forgive my bluntness, but… Goddamn, Sam Sax can write some poems. Ross Gay” And he can. I am not sure though if I like them or not. There are some fabulous images. He just explores what it was/is to be him. Gay, Jewish, male, a person and so much more. And he does it wonderfully, creatively, not easily through his poems. His experiences. His knowledge. Sax is not for the “I like flowers and pretty ponies” poetry crowd. He is for the “this poem will […]
Do not give the sirens call a listen
I am not sure when everyone slept in We Slept Here, unless it was a drug induced state, but Sierra DeMulder does a lot of other things, too. She does not hold back. She gives you the picture of a girl growing up in a family that allowed abuse. Oh, dad did not hit mom, so that is how they justified it, but it is forever burned into her brain her father yelling and her mother taking it. She does not hold back. She gives […]
She’s fought giants, clobbered dragons, now she’s gotta churn that butter?
Monsters Beware! by Rafael Rosado and Jorge Aguirre is the third in the series of Claudette and her friend’s adventures. There is Giants Beware! and Dragons Beware! as well. And while this is a mostly standalone story, find the first two and read them first. Of course, if I had done that I probably would not have read this one. First, let me say the writing is great. There is a lot going on, you are wondering how they will fight the monsters, churn that […]
I want Olivia Gatwood as my new best friend
New American Best Friend is a book that makes me want Olivia Gatwood as my new best friend. Mostly because maybe then they can explain a few things to me. While the poems are straight forward, there are a few images I am trying to figure out what they mean as they can be interpreted a few ways. Then again, maybe that is the point? However, there is no real question about Ode to My Bitch Face (and trust me, if you say you did […]
Books about books, dance, reporters and scuba diving!
Last night, I was looking at the box of (sadly) damaged books at work. I saw four I Can Read books. I have not read one in a while, so I picked them up. They average out to be a 2.5 for the four, but kids will enjoy and will be 5’s down the board. My biggest complaint with easy readers is companies do not have a uniform rating system. Publisher X might have these at a Level 1 but another would have them as […]
