Bibliophile's Reviews:

Good, especially on the grand scale of sequels to books that don’t need sequels

Warrior Girl Unearthed by Angeline Boulley

December 31, 2024 by Bibliophile Leave a Comment

I saw that Firekeeper’s Daughter had a sequel, and I didn’t know weather to be excited or disappointed since, usually, sequels to such incredible books are sad and unnecessary. However, this one, since it is less of a sequel and more of a companion novel, didn’t disappoint. This book follows Perry Firekeeper-Birch, one of Daunis’s cousins (I think). She was expecting to just spend her summer having fun, but she gets into a fender bender and has to pay Daunis back for her jeep, so […]

Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley

December 31, 2024 by Bibliophile Leave a Comment

“Some boats are made for the river and some for the ocean. And there are some who can go anywhere because they always know the way home.” This book is about Daunis Fontaine, a biracial unenrolled tribal member, meaning she doesn’t feel like she fits in in her hometown or the nearby Ojibwe reservation. However, her family experiences tragedy, and Daunis decides to stay and care for her family, which is how she ends up meeting Jamie, a new recruit on her brother’s hockey team. […]

Why do all the characters names start with j?

Orbiting Jupiter by Gary D. Schmidt

December 31, 2024 by Bibliophile Leave a Comment

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” And that’s when I started crying. Crying like a kindergarten kid in front of everyone. Crying because Joseph wasn’t just my friend. I had his back. And he had mine. That’s what greater love is.” I picked this book up from the library, not realizing or remembering that I had read it before. When I realized I had, I decided to read it anyway because I needed something […]

First book I’ve not finished in a while

The Astonishing Color of After by Emily X.R. Pan

December 31, 2024 by Bibliophile Leave a Comment

I’m sure we’ve all been in this scenario; you just finished a book, you don’t have any library holds coming anytime soon, you don’t feel like re reading something, and you just keep looking at books on your TBR hoping that the library will have them but they don’t, so you find something random that people seem to like and just give it a go. That’s why I picked this book up, and I kind of regret it since I feel like it was a […]

Why were there 6 chapters worth of exposition?

The Color of My Words by Lynn Joseph

December 31, 2024 by Bibliophile Leave a Comment

On the subject of books I read for school, I had to read this one for Spanish class (in Spanish), and it was definitely my least favorite book I’ve had to read for school this year. The Color of My Words tells the story of Ana Rosa, an 11 or 12 year old girl in the Dominican Republic soon after Trujillo’s dictatorship who dreams of being an author. However, due to the lingering political turmoils, it isn’t safe to write. Thought the book, Ana Rosa […]

A story that needs to be told more often

The Distance Between Us by Reyna Grande

December 31, 2024 by Bibliophile Leave a Comment

“There is something more powerful than La Llorona – a power that takes away parents not children. It is called the United States.” This book is the other one we read in our English unit along with Messy Roots, and I generally enjoyed it more (also, thinking about it now it would probably have been smart to do them as a joint review but it’s too late now so I’ll just link my Messy Roots review here). The Distance Between Us is a memoir by […]
