A romance with a pickpocket twist

March 8, 2015 by Beth Ellen 1 Comment

Thanks to the amazing Mrs. Julien I borrowed her copy of To Love a Thief as neither my library, nor my pre-moving library’s online catalog contained it. Which really is sad, as this one was definitely a favorite so far this year! Out of the 20 or so I’ve read this year, TLAT is definitely in the Top 5. Ladies, as always, your recommendations are just stellar. Come April, July and October, aka when I live out of hotels for a month at a time, […]

A Romance, and I can’t even care to add more to the title.

March 4, 2015 by Beth Ellen 2 Comments

Ugh. Wow. Can I write a one word review on the latest in my Pennyroyal Green adventures? Between the Devil and Ian Eversea was definitely not her best effort. This puts all of her other mediocre ones into perspective. But before I go into full rant a little background/plot first. This is obviously an Eversea story within the series, and this time it’s Ian (of What I Did for the Duke fame) and Titania, the previously mentioned Duke’s ward. And yes, she does have an absolutely […]

A Novel in the Swingin’ Sixties

March 1, 2015 by Beth Ellen 6 Comments

I have a love/meh relationship with one Nick Hornby. He wrote High Fidelity for which I will forever love him more than I thought possible. He also wrote About a Boy which was okay, but resulted in an excellent film so again I appreciate. Fever Pitch (ignoring both films, including the Colin Firth one) also delightfully captures what being a true sports fan is all about. His more recent novels? So mediocre it’s painful. A Long Way Down was a slog through, and I honestly […]

A Novel About Everything

February 28, 2015 by Beth Ellen 2 Comments

So just like everyone else here on the Read I to have now read Station Eleven (well we do have the book club coming up). Actually I didn’t read it, I listened to it, and what a delightful treat. The narrator Kirsten Potter was just stellar, but more on that later. And at this point my entire review I wrote after this just disappeared. In a very not awesome way. All of those thoughts gone. Well, that were very convoluted thoughts anyways, and I’m not […]

A Romance and Everyone Ever Was Correct…

February 17, 2015 by Beth Ellen 6 Comments

And I’m here. Thank goodness for a snow day today (for 4 inches of snow. Wimps.), because my world just became so much better. BEST ROMANCE YET THIS YEAR. Everyone: if you read romance, and have not read this one yet I MUST INSIST you do so. It does start a touch slow, but oh, goodness was this one a winner. The fifth book of the Pennyroyal Green series, What I Did For a Duke, gave me every feeling I thought my cold, dead, cynical […]

A memoir that left me with mixed feelings

February 15, 2015 by Beth Ellen 3 Comments

My first non-romance review of the year, and it’s a book I have not been able to view positively. I often avoid bestsellers like the plague until I have a friend who’s book opinions I trust tell me to try it (like Station Eleven, I’m listening to it now, it’s a-mah-zing!). So why did I read Wild? Well, I moved ~6 months ago to this charming area almost three thousand miles from all my friends, but thankfully near my sister. And therefore I work (too […]
