A Novel that I should have read much sooner

August 20, 2015 by Beth Ellen 6 Comments

So I first heard about this one back in CBR V. I know this because I make Amazon wishlists for each year of the CBR in order to keep my TBR list from going bananas. I know, I’m a little crazy, but that’s got nothing on the statistics I run in excel on my reading habits. Anywho, story for another day. I kind of forgot about this one, until somewhere recently in a comment this year they mentioned how good The Age of Miracles was. […]

A Classic Old School Romance with Modern Sensibilities

August 18, 2015 by Beth Ellen 17 Comments

When Lord of Scoundrels appeared on the NPR list of romances to read, and my library had it with no waiting I said sure! Let’s give it a go. From the mid-90’s it’s definitely an older romance in a lot of ways, but there’s one thing that makes it all worth while: Jessica Trent is a heroine I and everyone else can believe in, love, and wish often that our current heroines behaved like her. This time we have Jessica Trent, a blueblood of no […]

A perfect romance novella

August 8, 2015 by Beth Ellen 10 Comments

A Kiss for Midwinter is perfect. It is so perfect that I can’t give it a perfect rating. Everything, the characters, the dialogue, the plotting, it’s all just right. And for that, because I’m an odd duck, it’s not my absolute favorite. Lydia is the BFF of Minnie, our heroine from A Duchess War. Jonas is the town doctor who knows a horrible secret from Lydia’s past. Lydia, because Jonas knows this secret, dislikes him immensely, feeling that he is always judging her. Jonas, pessimistic […]

A historical romance novella and the first Milan that I’ve loved!

July 31, 2015 by Beth Ellen 5 Comments

And I finally get what all of my fellow “ballers” are talking about when they talk about Milan. This amazing little novella is full of wit, life, some very real darkness, but overall a wonderful triumph and a happy ever after I can get behind! This is a prequel to the Brothers Sinister series. It tells the story of former governess, Serena, and the Duke of Clermont’s “man of affairs”, Hugo. Serena spends every day sitting outside the Duke of Clermont’s residence saying nothing, while […]

A historical romance, and my first historical Milan!

July 30, 2015 by Beth Ellen 6 Comments

So ladies (and gents!) I finally finished my first historical Courtney Milan! And I have so many feelings. I even emailed my sister an in depth attempt at understanding said feelings, but they may not be the most coherent thing. First though! The plot. Minnie, a genteel yet impoverished girl, lives in Leicester and there meets Robert, Duke of Clermont, while hiding behind a sofa from a prospective suitor. After this charming meet cute, you learn that neither Minnie nor Robert are what they seem. […]

Starting a New Adult series with yet more hockey…

July 26, 2015 by Beth Ellen 4 Comments

So I am, what Mr. Beth Ellen likes to call, full of hormones and baby. This ends up translating to, for the past month or so, an inability to finish any book remotely upsetting. Characters aren’t nice? Set it aside. People don’t fall in love? Set it aside. So in general, for the next many months of Beast Residency, it looks like I’ll be reviewing a lot of romances. After finishing up the Ivy Years series I started asking the Zon for recommendations like Sarina […]
