Beth Ellen's Reviews:

An incredibly mediocre young adult novel

October 5, 2015 by Beth Ellen 1 Comment

I’m sorry Mr. Green. You seem like a lovely person (I always enjoy you on podcasts or writing other places), but your books do not do it for me. I know you don’t care, as I’m no longer your target audience, but even back in the day I have a feeling I’d have called Miles Halter a pretentious little sh*t. Teenage me was a lot tougher on characters then I am now. Looking for Alaska is the story of Miles Halter. Friendless Miles comes from […]

A Romance with a Puppy Cannon

September 30, 2015 by Beth Ellen 5 Comments

Oh Ms. Milan, thank you for such a delightful book. Everyone told me to wait till I got to The Suffragette Scandal to see what her novels were all about and they’re totally right! While I loved The Countess Conspiracy as a book, and less as a romance novel, this one definitely goes the other way. THIS is a romance novel. Of the best kind. This time we have the story of Frederica (Free) Marshall, editrix of the Women’s Free Press and titular suffragette, and […]

A nonfiction that needs to be discussed

September 8, 2015 by Beth Ellen 3 Comments

So this is actually the first Jon Krakauer book I’ve ever read. All of his others have been on my TBR list for years, but they never seem to get bumped up. Enter his new book on a subject I feel incredibly strongly about, and a library hold was a must place. I read it in 3 days. It was fascinating, disturbing, angering and saddening all in one. Missoula is about a series of rape cases that came to light at the University of Montana […]

A romance that hit me right in the feelings

August 31, 2015 by Beth Ellen 6 Comments

It’s not often in a romance where I’m more interested in the non-relationship plot, but Ms. Milan continues to prove herself a rockstar of the genre by doing just that. Usually all I want to read is two people coming together and finding their version of happiness (hence why romance novellas are the best), but The Countess Conspiracy proves how a great author can take both a love story and a the main non-romance plot to make something special. The Countess Conspiracy is the beloved […]

A Charming New Romance

August 27, 2015 by Beth Ellen 9 Comments

So this was published Tuesday. Amazon shipped it to me. I received it yesterday after work and was done before midnight. I just couldn’t help myself! This is the Dare charm I know and love. There was her usual patented whimsy and disregard for history, but mixed in were characters who felt much more real than some of her other recent efforts. This one is the story of Madeline, a painfully shy gentleman’s daughter, and Logan, a captain from the Napoleonic Wars. Madeline, in order […]

A Romance where the secondary plot trumps the main one!

August 21, 2015 by Beth Ellen 4 Comments

So this is the second novel in the Brothers Sinister series, but fourth story overall. Thus far the two novellas have been perfection (and every romance reader and author should read and take note), but both novels haven’t done it for me yet. And that includes you, The Heiress Effect. This time we have Jane, an heiress of undistinguished birth, and Oliver Marshall, bastard brother of the Duke of Clermont. Jane comes off as loud, brash and uncouth, but has so much money that no one […]
