Bittersweet symphony (minus most of the angst)

June 29, 2016 by Beth Ellen 3 Comments

Bittersweet is the first book in Sarina Bowen’s new Vermont foodie series True North. I loved most of her Ivy Years series so when I had a credit from Amazon I decided to give this one a go. It was free, what did I have to lose? Griff Shipley is an ex-attempted pro football player, organic apple farmer in Vermont. I know, that’s a hell of a bio. Audrey Kidder was a 2 night stand in college, and now a trained chef trying to work […]

Hawaiian history factoids for the NPR set

June 28, 2016 by Beth Ellen 3 Comments

So this is my second Sarah Vowell audiobook this year. They’ve so far not been OMG have to read! But they’re quick, entertaining, and I learn a little something on my commutes. And they’re often on sale on Audible which makes them a cheap little pick me up. This time we have Unfamiliar Fishes, the story of the Americanization of Hawaii. Starting with Captain Cook discovering the islands, through the first missionaries arriving (from New England of course!) to their grandchildren annexing Hawaii to the […]

A bearded romance

June 24, 2016 by Beth Ellen Leave a Comment

The wonderful emmalita offered to share this one with me, but when kindle wouldn’t let her, she gifted it instead! Isn’t she the best!? I finally dipped my toe into Penny Reid’s library, and this one was a great place to start. Grin and Beard It is the story of Sienna, America’s Sweetheart and Oscar winning actress (think JLaw but Latina), and Jethro, National Park Ranger and a guy trying to turn his life around. They meet cute, and from that instant attraction the story […]

A classic romance re-read

June 23, 2016 by Beth Ellen 7 Comments

This will be my first time reviewing a re-read here on the CBR, but with this re-read I realized, I did not remember this book at all. 2013 was a heady time for me. I was following the CBR for the first time and discovering all sorts of new authors, especially in my favorite genre of romance. The ladies on here kept mentioning Lisa Kleypas so I finally went to the library and got one out. Fast forward to a month later… and I’ve read […]

It was okay? That’s all I got.

June 8, 2016 by Beth Ellen Leave a Comment

This was the other half of my Liane Moriarty pickup from the audible 2 for 1 sale. As previously stated I have quite enjoyed Ms. Moriarty’s later works so I was happy to delve into her back catalogue. This time we have the story of the Kettle triplets: Lynn, Kat, and Gemma. Their lives are completely intertwined. We learn at the start that by the end of the story one sister is pregnant, and another is crazy enough to throw a fondue fork at her. […]

Revolutionary era romance

June 3, 2016 by Beth Ellen Leave a Comment

So starting in 2013 I began my re-discovery of the romance genre. First with the master, Ms. Kleypas, but then continued further and Ms. Quinn was an early one. I overall quite enjoyed her Bridgerton series (and recently just discovered the second epilogues) so when I saw that she was starting a new series spun off of my beloved Bridgertons I had to get it from the library. This is the story of Billie (Sybilla) Bridgerton, aunt of all the previous series, and George, neighbor […]
