Math and Baseball, what more could you want?

August 25, 2016 by Beth Ellen 1 Comment

What a beautiful little story. I’m not sure who reviewed this one on here back for CBRV!, but whoever it was thank you. Enter an audible sale on Cassandra Campbell’s narration, and this was one of many snatched up. Ms. Campbell’s voice is wonderfully soothing for long car rides with the Little so we’ve been enjoying her quite a bit. The Housekeeper and the Professor is the story of, well, it’s right there in the title. Our narrator and housekeeper begin the tale explaining how […]

If only the hammer were his…

August 22, 2016 by Beth Ellen 1 Comment

This is actually book 3 in the Iron Druid Chronicles. I read (listened, the only way to do IDC) the first two in the series 2 years ago. I started this one, got half an hour in, got mad, and set it aside. Fast forward two years to all of a sudden having over quadruple my old commute time, because Little Beth Ellen’s child care hasn’t switched yet. Once it has my commute will only be triple the old time. That’ll be nice. Anywho, as […]

A moving, but devastating Ian McEwan (Wait! isn’t that all of them?)

August 17, 2016 by Beth Ellen Leave a Comment

So this might be a weird affectation, but whatever it is what it is. I have zero interest in physically reading Ian McEwan’s books. I tried Atonement, but his writing style does not lend itself to my enjoyment. What I do enjoy is listening to his books. All the beautiful prose, and none of giant, never ending blocks of text. This tale is a snippet in time in the life of Fiona, a high family court judge in London. At the start, one evening while […]

A pretentious, but overall fun collection of short stories

August 10, 2016 by Beth Ellen Leave a Comment

So this was my latest audiobook adventure. I’m pretty sure I picked it up when it was on the daily deal, and it was just fine to listen to for some commutes. Bream Gives Me Hiccups is a collection of short stories by Jesse Eisenberg. I only know Jesse through his acting, and while I like him his persona has always felt a little pretentious to me. I didn’t particularly mind, he just felt that way. These short stories have done nothing to persuade me […]

P&P in Cinci

August 10, 2016 by Beth Ellen Leave a Comment

So thanks to all my fellow Cannonballers Eligible popped up on my radar. I hadn’t heard about the Austen Project, but if I’d had it isn’t really my thing. I’m a huge Austenite (minus Mansfield Park because… ugh), but I don’t do messing with her very well. I don’t do the “sequels” or the re-imaginings easily (except Clueless which is one of the most perfect movies ever made). I haven’t even seen the Joe Wright version of P&P, because it’s Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth […]

A jam packed romance

August 8, 2016 by Beth Ellen 3 Comments

To round out my Sarah MacLean reading (until her latest one is published at the end of the month) I started up her newest series Scandals and Scoundrels. The first in the series starts with a tertiary character from her last book (Never Judge a Lady by Her Cover), so it appears that continuing to go in order with her books is the right choice. This time we have Sophie, the least scandalous sister in a family of scandals, and King (real name Aloysius!), the […]
