These Toxic Things by Rachel Howzell Hall

May 31, 2024 by Bea Pants Leave a Comment

Sometimes when reading a mystery or thriller book, when the ending is being telegraphed really hard, I think it must be a misdirection. Then, when the telegraphed ending is revealed as a big shocking twist, I wind up disappointed. This, along with an inability to connect with the main character were two of the main issues I had with These Toxic Things by Rachel Howzell Hall. The story follows Mickie Lambert, a twenty something woman who creates “digital scrapbooks” for mostly older adults who […]

I have to sing about the book I read

The Book of Doors by Gareth Brown

May 15, 2024 by Bea Pants Leave a Comment

What if the trope about every book being a new adventure happened literally? This is what happens in The Book of Doors. Cassie Andrews lives an unassuming life working in a bookstore when she is given a strange book called The Book of Doors. She soon discovers that, while in possession of the book, she can open a door into any place she can imagine. At first, she and her best friend Izzy enjoy going on instant adventures by simply opening the front door to […]

Hey, teacher! Leave those kids alone!

Where the Drowned Girls Go by Seanan McGuire

April 30, 2024 by Bea Pants Leave a Comment

This seventh installment of Seanan McGuire’s Wayward Children series does not take us to another world. Instead, we visit the Whitethorn Institute which is the polar opposite of Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children. While Eleanor West’s school caters to the many quirks of the children who have returned from other places, The Whitethorn Institute does everything it can to wring out all thoughts of other worlds from its pupils and return them to the “real” world. It emphasizes conformity and rationality above all else. […]

Can you hear the horses? ‘Cause here they come

Across the Green Grass Fields by Seanan McGuire

April 24, 2024 by Bea Pants 1 Comment

Though we might not like to admit it, many of us threw our lot in with the mean girl against the “weird” girl when we were kids. We chose what seemed like the relative safety of popularity over being considered strange and outcast by our peers. This choice is what sends Regan, our protagonist, through her door and into her journey to the Hooflands in this sixth installment of Seanan McGuire’s Wayward Children series. This book can be viewed as a standalone as it doesn’t […]

An exercise in female rage

Nightwatching by Tracy Sierra

April 9, 2024 by Bea Pants Leave a Comment

This book filled me with rage. You must read it! There’s no way for me to write a proper review without some spoilers, so be warned. I will do my best to keep them to a minimum. This appears to be Tracy Sierra’s first book, and I can’t wait to see what she does next. It’s a tight, well written thriller that I had a hard time putting down, but also wanted to throw across the room because, as I said, rage. A mother […]

I wanna live like common people

The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins

April 3, 2024 by Bea Pants Leave a Comment

This is the second book I’ve read by Rachel Hawkins. I loved her first book, The Villa, which centered around an Italian villa which was the site of a mysterious death in the seventies. This second book centers around heiress Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodwar Miller Kenmore. Ruby first became famous when she was just a toddler after being the victim of a famous kidnapping (think Lindbergh baby with a happier ending). She’s been married and widowed four times which only adds to her notoriety. When […]
