BEARS. BOOKS. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.Cannonball Read notes with great sadness the passing of our friend and immensely talented writer, Jennifer L. Baxla (baxlala) on Tuesday, July 5th 2022. To honor Jennie, donations can be made in her name to Oak Tree Corner, a support center for grieving children in Dayton, Ohio, a non-profit organization which Jennie loved, and where she volunteered for many years.

I’ve seen injustice in the world and I’ve corrected it

(My first attempt at a review of this book was: I can’t write this right now because it was deeply upsetting and made me feel too many things. So. You know. I’ll try to do a bit better than that below, but no promises.) (Also, before I start at the very beginning, I do want to say that the end of this novel was rather convenient but I was OK with it because this was a novel and not real life and in real life […]

Look around, look around, at how lucky we are to be alive right now

THIS WAS GREAT. For reals. I really liked this one. It reminded me a lot of Uprooted, which is still on track to be my favorite book of the year (as evidenced by the fact that I bring it up in so many other reviews GIVE IT A REST, JENNIE). Interesting that they both involve dragons. Well. “Interesting.” Also, “dragons.” Anyway. (I’m not sure this needs to be said at this point of Cannonball but please forgive me if I can’t remember all the facts […]

In command where you belong

June 27, 2016 by baxlala Leave a Comment

I started Cannonball this year with the rule that I couldn’t start a new book unless I’d at least written a draft of a review for the book I’d just finished. This rule was relaxed later to just writing a few notes before starting a new book. Now what I’ve been doing is just creating the document in Google Docs but NOT ACTUALLY WRITING ANYTHING. Do you know how frustrating it is to open a document, thinking there will at least be an OUTLINE of […]

There’s nothing like summer in the city, someone under stress meets someone looking pretty

It is a truth universally acknowledged that I will devour any Pride & Prejudice adaptation as quickly as possible. And Eligible proved to be no different. This is the second modernized version of Pride & Prejudice that I’ve read (the first being Bridget Jones’s Diary, of course), and the third that I’ve, I don’t know, CONSUMED if you include the very excellent Lizzie Bennet Diaries. (And why wouldn’t you?) This version has updated our favorite characters for modern times, and provided them with new challenges, […]

Though virtue is not a word I’d apply to this situation

June 27, 2016 by baxlala 3 Comments

Guys. This book was super depressing. I read it fairly quickly, but it was gloomy and I was already feeling sort of gloomy so I’m not sure I really enjoyed it. It was, however, that it was well-written and engaging. I just don’t know that I’ll read more. The world is bleak enough without spending my leisure time depressing the hell out of myself. This novel is a compelling murder mystery with great characters, and I found myself growing more and more invested in solving […]

I picked up a pen, I wrote my own deliverance

June 21, 2016 by baxlala Leave a Comment

I wasn’t sure if I was really enjoying this novel until about halfway through, when I realized I didn’t want to stop reading it until it was over. And then when it WAS over, I almost started reading it all over again. That’s the second book this year that has brought about this reaction. The first was Uprooted, and honestly, I’m happy enough to experience that feeling just once a year, so I feel sort of selfish for getting to enjoy it twice. Anyway! On […]
