Well, this was an odd little book. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started it. I think I’d requested it from the library long ago based on someone else’s CBR review, but I’d forgotten why. I liken the experience of reading Every Heart a Doorway to reading The Library of Mount Char: it was a strange book, I had no idea where it was going, and some super fucked up things happened (though not quite as fucked up as Mount Char). I didn’t […]
I will not equivocate on my opinion, I have always worn it on my sleeve
The first Julia Wertz graphic novel that I read was Drinking at the Movies and, as I read it, I realized I’d found a kindred spirit. Wertz is a sarcastic curmudgeon who drinks too much and makes the same mistakes over and over and yet still remains realistically optimistic about her life. So. She’s a person, I guess. She also has a fucking filthy mouth and is hilarious and reminds me of my friends. So reading her books is like hanging out with a friend. […]
You say, the price of my love’s not a price that you’re willing to pay
This is the third Jennifer Weiner book I’ve read, but the first that I’ve picked up in at least 10 years. I remember enjoying the other two, Good in Bed and In Her Shoes, which was later made into a movie with Toni Collette and Cameron Diaz that I have seen approximately seven times for some reason (not that it’s bad, I just don’t know why I’ve watched it so much). If Who Do You Love is ever made into a movie, I’m not sure […]
To your union, and the hope that you provide
Remember on Sex and the City (yeah, that’s right) when Carrie and Miranda try on wedding dresses, just for shits and giggles, and Carrie has a panic attack? That’s exactly how I felt about trying on wedding dresses, not because I didn’t want to marry my fiance (like Carrie) but because I already hate shopping AND trying on clothes. The thought of trying on wedding dresses in front of other people made my skin crawl. I just wanted something comfortable, something non-strapless, and a dress […]
I’ve been in Paris meeting lots of different ladies
I’ve read Lucy Knisley’s books mostly out of order. I started with her more recent and worked my way around. Not on purpose, but sometimes that’s just how reading goes, you know? I first discovered Knisley’s work via her webcomic and loved it because she loved, and drew about, so many of the things I loved: cats, books, Harry Potter, food. She was also navigating some of the same things I was, namely How to Adult and everything that went with it. I was also […]
We are waiting in the wings for you
This book was really, really weird. I’m still not sure whether I liked it. My regular gauge for whether or not I liked a book is if I’d read it again and I’m just not sure about this one. It was an intriguing story and did keep me guessing about where it was going. So there’s that. I also give it a lot of credit for just being really fucking weird. Let your freak flag fly, book. Let it fly. Like. For real. I’m not […]
