Quirky Heroines in Unlikely Situations

The Girl He Used to Know by Tracey Garvis Graves

The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman

December 23, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

(5 stars) The Girl He Used to Know by Tracey Garvis Graves This book wrecked me. It is the only book I’ve read in probably the last several years where I had maybe 30 pages left and I skipped to the end to read the last page because I couldn’t bear it any longer. I then felt deep shame, of course, but no regrets. “Life isn’t easy for anyone. We all have challenges. We all face adversity. It’s how we overcome it that makes us […]

Mothers and Daughters

Dear Girls: Intimate Tales, Untold Secrets, & Advice for Living Your Best Life by Ali Wong

Inside Out by Demi Moore

December 19, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

These books are both celebrity memoirs, but they share a lot more than that. Both have a theme of the relationships between mothers and daughters — Wong’s trouble connecting with her mother which influences her relationship with her two daughters. And Demi’s rather terrifying childhood with her mother (and how she tried to repair the relationship as an adult) as well as her troubled relationship with her own three daughters. (4 stars) Dear Girls: Intimate Tales, Untold Secrets, & Advice for Living Your Best Life […]

The Body: A Guide for Occupants by Bill Bryson

December 18, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

This was an absolutely fascinating read, chock-full of interesting information told in a warm and funny way. Bill Bryson comes off as someone who is genuinely excited to teach this material, which is my favorite kind of person to learn from. Also, I listened to the last hour or so of the audiobook while running a marathon on Sunday, and I’ll tell you, there is no greater motivation to keep yourself moving than listening to all the different ways your body is slowly dying! “It’s […]

“But what does the “greatest good” mean when it comes to medicine?”

Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital by Sheri Fink

December 18, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I live in North Texas, so while my town was definitely not directly affected by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, I do vividly recall when it happened and remember a lot of the repercussions. I worked at an animal hospital at the time, and we had tons of new patients in the weeks after the hurricane. People who escaped prior to, or immediately after the flooding and needed things like heartworm prevention for their dogs, or vaccinations so they could kennel them somewhere while they put […]

The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper by Hallie Rubenhold

December 18, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

This, as many other reviewers have noted, is really not a book about Jack the Ripper. He barely comes into it at all, which certainly seems to be the author’s intention. Instead, she focuses all her time on researching the lives of his five most likely victims. Each woman and her family has an entire section devoted solely to her story. “It is for them that I write this book. I do so in the hope that we may now hear their stories clearly and […]

“We repeat what we don’t repair”

Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane

December 12, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

This is a very sad book. It’s well-written, and I definitely wanted to find out what happened to each of the characters, but it was just such a beat-down that I would not say I enjoyed it. “There was no predicting where life would go. There was no real way for a person to try something out, see if he liked it…because you try it and try it and try it a little longer and next thing it’s who you are.” Ask Again, Yes starts […]
