I am a huge fan of oral histories, whether discussions of television shows or movies. And I watched The Daily Show religiously until Jon Stewart took his sabbatical a few years ago. So this book was definitely right up my alley. Thank you whoever reviewed it recently and recommended it to me! “The outlandish 2000 election and Bush’s victory had come along at the perfect time, helping Stewart, the correspondents, and the writers sharpen The Daily Show’s tone of bemused mockery. The next world-changing events […]
Hard to compete with a plagues, tbh
So I picked this book up after finishing Jennifer Wright’s fantastic book about plagues. I’ll never be interested in historical breakups the way that I am in plagues (who could be, really?), but I still enjoyed her writing style in this book like I did the other. Several other people have reviewed it, but in case you missed those — she basically picks 13 breakups throughout history and explains how a really terrible they were. Like, really terrible. It’s a pretty simple concept and a […]
It took 4 years for this book to come out — I can’t wait til the next one!!
Oh my God you guys how long am I going to have to wait for a sequel to this book? I am glad that I waited as long as I did to pick up Rook, but then I loved it and immediately read Stiletto and now I’m just sitting here. Spoilers for the first book! “You’re a tool, to be used and directed for the good of the people. Sometimes you’ll be a scalpel, cutting out disease. Sometimes you’ll be a sword, and you’ll take […]
“Change happens through understanding.”
I just really, really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the positive upbeat attitude of the author, I enjoyed how youthful she sounded while remaining put together and intelligent, I enjoyed the many, many exclamation points, and I absolutely love that that this book is available for tweens and teens to read to help understand other people in their community better. “Change happens through understanding, and one of my biggest hopes is that our next generation of kids will grow up in a world with more compassion.” […]
It’s true — you’re not Mark Ruffalo
So this was kind of stupid, but in a fun way. Dave Horwitz & Marisa Pinson apparently started it as a blog, which I’ve never heard of, but their Upright Citizen’s Brigade credentials got me to pick it up. Their early deal-breaker that stated, “You’re not Mark Ruffalo” (“Look, we’ve tried everything, but you’re not Mark Ruffalo”) kept me reading. It’s basically a list of reasons not to date a person — either by refusing to date them at all, or break up with them at later […]
I just really wanted to give this kid a hug
Oh, this book just broke my heart — this poor kid grew up with so much internal confusion, and external pressure from his parents and school. I was so glad to finish it and then google him to discover that he’s now in his 40s and seems to be doing just fine. “I mean, why would a God create all of us and put us here if we were supposed to go around feeling bad about ourselves and pretending to be somebody we’re not? How […]
