“Stories – the big ones, the true ones – can be caught but never killed.”

Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators by Ronan Farrow

January 3, 2020 by badkittyuno 2 Comments

I had hoped to finish Catch and Kill right after She Said, in order to compare the two in a review. Unfortunately, the library hold list did not make that doable. But it’s hard not to compare the two. For what it’s worth, I think She Said was the better book, but a lot of that may have been due to my issues with how Farrow told his story… “I think that it doesn’t matter if you’re a well-known actress, it doesn’t matter if you’re […]

“The Greeks created gods that were in their image”

Mythos: The Greek Myths Retold by Stephen Fry

December 30, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I enjoyed the hell out of this book, which I listened to on audio narrated by Fry himself. It was a fun, interesting read and a great way to end my year! “The Greeks created gods that were in their image; warlike but creative, wise but ferocious, loving but jealous, tender but brutal, compassionate, but vengeful.” If you liked Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology, you should definitely check this out. Fry starts with the very earliest Greek gods, and recounts their stories leading up to the age […]

Katherine Center writes a very particular type of book — and helped me hit my 5th cannonball of the year!

Happiness for Beginners by Katherine Center

The Bright Side Of Disaster by Katherine Center

Everyone is Beautiful by Katherine Center

December 29, 2019 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

I really enjoyed her novel How to Walk Away, so once I finished it I sought out some other books by Katherine Center. These were all great reads, although it’s likely that by this time next year I will have no recollection of them whatsoever. They’re those kind of feel-good books that you enjoy in the moment even if they’re not going to stay with you for a long time. (4 stars) Happiness for Beginners by Katherine Center I liked this one primarily because I could […]

“Since I doubt, I think; since I think, I exist.”

We Are Legion (We Are Bob) (Bobiverse #1) by Dennis E. Taylor

December 27, 2019 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

I don’t read a ton of science fiction these days, but every once in a while something catches my eye. We Are Legion (We Are Bob) caught my eye while on sale at Audible, and it really was a fun (and very geeky) read. “I had three issues that bothered me. Was I conscious? Could I actually consider myself to be alive? And was I still Bob? Philosophers had been going on and on about this type of thing for centuries, but now, for me, it […]

“Even the wind…scattering you, because you are a girl, and because you are ash.”

She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement by Jodi Kantor, Megan Twohey

Thick: And Other Essays by Tressie McMillan Cottom

Girls Burn Brighter by Shobha Rao

December 27, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

(5 stars) She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement by Jodi Kantor, Megan Twohey This is a frustrating, angry-making book due entirely to the material — the writing itself is very well-done. But listening to hour after hour of the abuse suffered by women at the hands of powerful men made this a tough one to get through. I had to stop and take breaks from it multiple times. I just downloaded Ronan Farrow’s Catch and Kill as well, but I […]

A couple of not so thrilling thrillers

The Invited by Jennifer McMahon

The Mother-in-Law by Sally Hepworth

December 23, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

(3 stars) The Invited by Jennifer McMahon Why do I keep reading Jennifer McMahon books? They’re never terrible, but they’re never great either. But I keep picking them up! Helen and Nate have decided to undertake a rather ambitious project. Quitting their jobs teaching high school, they move to Vermont to build their own home on a piece of property with a very dark past. Helen, obsessed with history in general and with the property in particular, does enough research to realize that a lot […]
