Another memoir about a messed-up childhood! You know, I wonder sometimes why I, and my little sister, read so many of these books. We certainly did not have messed up childhoods. For one thing these memoirs are everywhere: easily accessible, quick to read. But for me, I think the appeal is reading how another person lived their life, and sort of testing it against my own abilities. Could I survive like that? It’s the same reason I like to read books about people who have […]
“We tell our stories to be heard. Sometimes those stories free us. Sometimes they free others. When they are not told, they free no one.”
So this is the other book that I read by a woman named Ariel Leve in the past week. This one I actually downloaded as an audio book, and enjoyed it that way primarily because Martha Plimpton read it aloud and I just love Martha Plimpton. In fact, I had to keep reminding myself that it was not Martha Plimpton’s autobiography that I was reading. “I hate you. I love you. You’re a moron. I never said that. You’re the most important person in the world […]
The Rules Do Not Apply
I just realize that eight of the last ten books that I’ve read have been memoirs, and seven of those eight have been written by women. So my apologies if this review isn’t too in-depth — I’m trying to sneak it in before April ends and honestly I didn’t really like it very much so I can’t remember too much. It doesn’t help that I immediately followed it with a book by someone with almost exactly the same name but a much more interesting story. […]
Alec Baldwin <3 Alec Baldwin
Look at the cover of this book. Or Google it, if for some reason my book cover isn’t showing up (which they haven’t been doing lately and am I doing something wrong?). Anyway, examine the cover. Look at the handsome actor with his cleft chin, presumably standing in the rain in this black and white shot that somehow conveys angst, and art, and sacrifice. This book can absolutely be judged by its cover. You don’t need to know anything else about it. I would not […]
“You can have anything, once you admit you deserve it.”
I am on a new medication that apparently causes insomnia. Unfortunately, I discovered this at 1:30 on Saturday morning, while at a friend’s house. I woke up, on a strange couch, and could not fall back asleep for anything. Since I wasn’t home, I couldn’t just turn on the TV or grab a book or whatever. So I went on Overdrive, downloaded this book, and read the whole thing. “For as long as I could remember, I had been apologizing for existing, for trying to […]
“I’m proud to be a work in progress.”
I downloaded this audiobook because someone on here reviewed it favorably (I’m 5 reviews behind so I’m not going to take the time to look up who, but thanks!) and I needed something to listen to while I’m waiting for my next Audible credit to spend on Outlander. I had no idea that Hannah Hart was the Drunk Kitchen chick, despite having recently read the Drunk Kitchen cookbook. The cookbook was fun and all, but this autobiography was excellent. I’d highly recommend the audio version, read by the author […]
