Just REALLY well-written thrillers, guys

Unsub by Meg Gardiner

Into the Black Nowhere by Meg Gardiner

January 11, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

If you like crime novels — I’m thinking Jeffrey Deaver, Preston/Child, Tami Hoag, all the ones I loved growing up — you should try this series out. Meg Gardiner has written two novels (so far) about Caitlin Hendrix, with a third and a procedural for CBS in the works. UNSUB “But fate was a myth constructed by fools—people who gamble or follow horoscopes, who believe the stars rule their lives.” The first novel, Unsub, introduces us to Caitlin as a narcotics detective in the Bay area. She’s […]

I wanted so much more from this one

This Will Only Hurt a Little by Busy Philipps

January 9, 2019 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

This book starts out so well — Busy has put up with a lot of shit during her years in Hollywood (I mean…James Franco alone…) and she pulls no punches calling out the hypocrisy and misogyny she has seen and fought. “Men love a woman who laughs at the joke, especially if the joke is at her expense. “She’s so cool. She just gets it.” Her happier stories are great reads, too — her triumphs and behind the scenes joys. But something starts to sort […]

British crime novels with double-meaning in the titles are becoming my jam

The Breakdown by B.A. Paris

January 9, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I listen to a lot of audiobooks — I walk or run about 40 miles a week, plus I like to listen to audiobooks while cleaning or cooking instead of having the tv on. I alternate between two genres, usually. I prefer audiobooks when tackling dense non-fiction subjects, because I know I tend to skim if I’m reading such things in text form, and British crime novels — the accents alone are worth the download. The Breakdown, which refers not only to the broken down car […]

Triumphant may be an understatement

The Hiding Place: The Triumphant True Story of Corrie ten Boom by Corrie ten Boom

January 2, 2019 by badkittyuno 4 Comments

The Hiding Place, originally published in 1984 and rereleased more recently as an audiobook, kept me hooked for the whole 10 hour run-time. It definitely put the “difficult” activities I was performing while listening (taping and painting a bedroom) into perspective. “Surely there is no more wretched sight that the human body unloved and uncared for.” Corrie ten Boom spent the first 50 years of her life pleasantly and quietly. Her father’s family owned a watch business in Haarlem, and she worked alongside him repairing […]

Playing end of the year catch up

December 29, 2017 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

Okay, I’m 25 reviews behind guys. I’m going to finish them here, and then be done with CBR I think. I absolutely love this community, and will probably keep logging on to read y’all’s awesome reviews, but trying to keep up with my own has felt increasingly like an obligation, not like a fun expansion of my love of reading. But I’ve read some great books this month, so here’s one last blast of recommendations… The Blood of Emmett Till by Timothy B. Tyson (3 stars) […]

We take so much for granted

December 13, 2017 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

Manal al-Sharif grew up in Mecca, and through a combination of her family’s teachings and her time at school, spent most of her childhood and teen years as a religious fanatic. Then, in her 20s, she became a computer security engineer, working with a variety of people, and realized just how wrong the situation in her country really was. She began to rebel against the government by doing something that most of us bitch and moan about doing every day: daring to drive. Manal tells […]
