Guys, I tried SO HARD

Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders

January 29, 2019 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

I tried SO HARD to read this book. It’s is on everyone’s recommended list, and currently hold as 3.78 rating on Goodreads, which is generally a good sign. I tried reading the hard copy a few months ago when I first became aware of it, and totally failed to get into it. So I tried again to listen to the audio version — I figured I was on a road trip, and would have nothing distracting me. And the audio version has basically the best list […]

A long-ass book worth the read (or listen)

She Has Her Mother's Laugh: The Powers, Perversions, and Potential of Heredity by Carl Zimmer

January 29, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

(I am 2 1/2 weeks and 17 books behind in my reviews — why do I do this to myself??) So, this audio book is about 20 hours long. I listened to it over an entire vacation — the road trip there and back, plus all my downtime during my stay. And I listen to audio books at 1.75x speed. So yeah. It’s a looong book. But it’s totally worth it! It’s long because Zimmer researched the hell out of it, and despite a few chapters […]

The Lines We Cross by Randa Abdel-Fattah

January 15, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

(this book was also released in some places as When Michael Met Mina) “I’m starting to realize that being born into this social world is a little like being born into clean air. You take it in as soon as you breathe, and pretty soon you don’t even realize that while you can walk around with clear lungs, other people are wearing oxygen masks just to survive.” This is a boy meets girl, YA novel. In this instance, the boy is an Australian white kid who […]

Quackery: A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything by Lydia Kang, Nate Pedersen

January 14, 2019 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

Y’all, crystalclear posted a review of Quackery: A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything back in November and I immediately put it on hold at the library. It was everything I could have possibly wanted: weird medical facts, crazy pictures and graphics, and a wicked sense of humor. Thank you crystalclear – I will be amazed if this one doesn’t make my top 3 list 11 months from now! Okay, so the authors break the book into a few different sections. Each section covers all of […]

What a weird little book

My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh

January 14, 2019 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

My Year of Rest and Relaxation is one of those books where you can’t put it down, but when you’re done, you’re not entirely sure if you liked it (or even what just happened). But in the end, I do think I liked this one. It felt very…Margaret Atwood-esque. “Sleep felt productive. Something was getting sorted out. I knew in my heart—this was, perhaps, the only thing my heart knew back then—that when I’d slept enough, I’d be okay. I’d be renewed, reborn. I would […]

A short little homage to Richard Matheson

Elevation by Stephen King

January 11, 2019 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

Elevation has been reviewed here at least once already, but I’ll give you a brief summary. Which will be easy, as it’s a rather brief book. “Hands on a clock, numbers on a bathroom scale, weren’t they only ways of trying to measure invisible forces that had visible effects?” Scott Carey lives in King’s well known little town of Castle Rock. He’s recently divorced, living alone with his cat, and has noticed something strange. He’s losing weight. Pretty steadily, in fact, and for no reason […]
