Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz

April 2, 2019 by badkittyuno 2 Comments

I read this in January. That’s how far behind I am. But I remember it pretty well. Which shows how good it was! The book opens with editor Susan Ryeland reading a manuscript by cranky author Alan Conway — the latest in a series about his cranky detective, Atticus Pünd. Conway has been working towards an ending for Pund for years, but Ryeland is hoping to get at least one or two more books from Conway first. So we meet Susan, and then dive into […]

Girl Logic: The Genius and the Absurdity by Iliza Shlesinger

February 19, 2019 by badkittyuno 2 Comments

I love Iliza Shlesinger. I watch a lot of stand up (it’s soothing!), and she remains on permanent rotation with John Mulaney, Ali Wong and Tom Segura in my kitchen. I’ve probably watched Confirmed Kills at least 10 times, and she never fails to crack me up. One of the things I love about her is her unabashed take-downs of what society expects from women. What we look like, what we act like, what choices we make — ALL OF IT IS WRONG NO MATTER WHAT WE DO. […]

” I was an immigrant. And no matter how Americanized I become, no matter how much Jay-Z I listen to, I’ll always be an immigrant”

How to American: An Immigrant's Guide to Disappointing Your Parents by Jimmy O. Yang

February 19, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I picked this up because it was on a bunch of “best of” lists a few months ago. I probably would have gotten more out of it if I was more familiar with Yang’s work (I only made it through a few episodes of Silicon Valley and haven’t seen Crazy Rich Asians – yet) but still found his story interesting and he’s definitely a funny guy. “From eating at El Pollo Loco salsa bar to the Golden Globes buffet, I managed to stumble through this journey with […]

B. A. Paris knows how to write a thriller!

Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris

February 19, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

This is the second of Paris’s books I’ve read, following The Breakdown a few weeks ago. While they share some basic characteristics (British thriller, mentally tortured woman, too-good-to-be-true husband), Behind Closed Doors starts faster and hits a lot harder. “We go downstairs and in the hall, he takes my coat from the cupboard and holds it open while I slip my arms into it. In the drive outside, he holds the car door for me and waits until I’m in. As he closes it behind me, I can’t […]

American Like Me: Reflections on Life Between Cultures by America Ferrera

February 19, 2019 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

I mean, check out that cover. That’s quite a dream list of writers, actors, activists and other badasses — all of whom contributed a story to this collection about what being American looks like in their own life. American Ferrera starts things off, talking about her love for her country and her (eventual) love for her name (not the easiest one to grow up with). She collected this stories from a variety of sources, people who immigrated to America, or were born to parents who […]

I definitely could have done without the Ted Bundy interviews

Chasing the Devil: My Twenty-Year Quest to Capture the Green River Killer by David Reichert

February 7, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

And following up the delightful Eric Idle reading his autobiography, I listened to the audio version of Chasing the Devil, written by the first detective on what eventually became known as the Green River Killer case. This audio book includes actual recorded interviews from the case, one of which is Reichart interview Ted fucking Bundy to get his insights. It was definitely an abrupt switch from the Pythons. Eventually identified as Gary Leon Ridgway, the Green River Killer wreaked havoc in the 1980s and 1990s along the […]
