So much more than a road trip

I Might Regret This: Essays, Drawings, Vulnerabilities, and Other Stuff by Abbi Jacobson

April 12, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I LOVED this book. LOVED IT. I would just copy and paste a bunch of quotes I liked but that’s not much of a review so I’m going to do that AND try to review it. Abbi Jacobson, of Broad City (which I haven’t really watched because I’m terrible about watching TV but what I’ve seen I really like) decides to take a soul-searching road trip across the country. During this time, she makes lists (I loved the lists), stays in creepy bed-and-breakfasts and asks herself […]

As hard as this book was to read, I cannot imagine living through it and writing it

Goodbye, Sweet Girl: A Story of Domestic Violence and Survival by Kelly Sundberg

April 12, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

“You made me hit you in the face,” he said mournfully. “Now everyone is going to know.” “I know,” I said. “I’m sorry.” Kelly Sundberg spent 10 years with a man who emotionally and physically abused her, used their son to control her, and isolated her from anyone who might be able to help. She talks about falling in love with him, and how wonderful he was with their son, and how much the community around them loved him. It’s heart-wrenching, watching her try to […]

Much more than just a memoir

I Can't Date Jesus: Love, Sex, Family, Race, and Other Reasons I've Put My Faith in Beyoncé by Michael Arceneaux

April 12, 2019 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

Coming on the heels of Ellie Kemper’s very twee memoir, My Squirrel Days, Michael Arceneaux’s I Can’t Date Jesus: Love, Sex, Family, Race, and Other Reasons I’ve Put My Faith in Beyoncé absolutely blew me away. I mean, it probably would have anyway, but WOW what a contrast. “I couldn’t make someone love me. I couldn’t make myself desirable to someone who didn’t want me. I couldn’t compel someone to see me in the same way in which I wanted to be seen. All I could do […]

TRYING SO HARD

My Squirrel Days by Ellie Kemper

April 12, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

A quick note: I finished this book over two months (because I am a garbage person and that’s how far behind I am in my reviews) and I distinctly remember NOT LIKING IT. However, at the time of reading it, I also had distinct memories of NOT LIKING The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (for many of the same reasons, which I’m about to get into). That being said, I have since started re-watching Kimmy and I’m liking it way more now. So while this will be a fairly […]

A meta murder mystery

The Word Is Murder (Hawthorne #1) by Anthony Horowitz

April 12, 2019 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

Oh my god this book was so much fun! I thought Anthony Horowitz’s other novel (Magpie Murders) was meta, but this goes above and beyond! Okay, let me see if I can sum this plot up correctly without TOO much confusion: Diana Cowper, mother of a famous actor, walks into a funeral parlor and arranges her own funeral. Then she goes home, and someone murders her (gasp!) — that’s our murder mystery. But then there’s a detective named Daniel Hawthorne. He wants a ghostwriter to write […]

In which Liane Moriarty comes off as a grumpy old lady (sorry Liane)

Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty

April 5, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I am probably the last person on this site to review this book, but I doubt I’m the only one who spent the whole time envisioning Liane Moriarty ranting about millennials spending all their money on avocado toast as she penned this “whodunnit” full of young people whining about social media and body issues as a pleasantly plump writer gets trashed by reviewers. And ohmigod the Russian villain. Hold on, I’m changing my 3 star rating to a 2. “I don’t get the obsession with […]
