Time to take a break from serial killers, I think

American Predator: The Hunt for the Most Meticulous Serial Killer of the 21st Century by Maureen Callahan

Birdman (Jack Caffery #1) by Mo Hayder

(3 stars) American Predator: The Hunt for the Most Meticulous Serial Killer of the 21st Century by Maureen Callahan This book has a really high (4.1!) rating on Goodreads but I think I’m a little burned out on serial killer books right now. This book was interesting enough, but my main takeaway was the incompetence of the lead prosecutor in the case (or at least how the author perceived that). So I spent most of the book feeling frustrated with the good guys rather than […]

“So fine, if you insist. This is a witch hunt. We’re witches, and we’re hunting you.”

The Witches Are Coming by Lindy West

January 24, 2020 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

This was great — it’s angry and funny and an excellent follow up to Shrill. Also a reminder that I need to start watching the series based on Shrill! “I think we can all agree that this fully checks out and that indeed it is men who are the true victims of witch hunts. Which they invented. To kill women.” West launches right into the thick of things in her first essay — how the repercussions of the #MeToo movement have a lot of men worried […]

Sappy, but some interesting history in the background

The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes

January 24, 2020 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I feel like Jojo Moyes has begun to resemble Liane Moriarty in my mind — I read their big hit a few years ago (Me Before You for Jojo, I think Big Little Lies for Moriarty), immediately devoured all their back catalog, and have jumped on the waiting list for each of their new books. But like Nine Perfect Strangers, which soured me on Moriarty a little (that book was just terrible), I may be ready to retire my super-fan status of Moyes. Not forever, but I […]

Youths, amiright?

The Distance Between Us by Kasie West

There's Something About Sweetie (Dimple and Rishi #2) by Sandhya Menon

Twice in a Blue Moon by Christina Lauren

January 22, 2020 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

Okay, Twice in a Blue Moon isn’t YA but it also wasn’t very good so I’m shoving it in here. These were all middling to fair kissing books — two chaste YA novels and one sexier (but really, not very good) adult novel. (3 stars) The Distance Between Us by Kasie West “A lot of people don’t get my humor. My mom calls it dry humor. I think that means “not funny,” but it also means I’m the only one who ever knows it’s a […]

“We never lose those whose stories remain with us.”

Before and After: The Incredible Real-Life Stories of Orphans Who Survived the Tennessee Children's Home Society by Judy Christie, Lisa Wingate

January 18, 2020 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

This book will probably appeal more to people who read Lisa Wingate’s Before We Were Yours. I actually started that book, but after a few chapters I just wasn’t getting into it and then it had to go back to the library and I just never bothered to check it out again. So I probably should have expected a similar lackluster response to Before And After, which Lisa Wingate wrote along with Judy Christie. This book came as a response to the many, many people who […]

“A shadow came over 42nd and Eighth Avenue. It completely covered the street for a split second.”

The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of September 11, 2001 by Garrett M. Graff

January 17, 2020 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I really enjoy the format of an oral history — but most of my experiences with that have been pop culture stories (Vanity Fair’s archives have some amazing reads). I like to see all of the different perspectives people hold of the same story, and I like to watch that story come together in their voices. The Only Plane in the Sky is an oral history of 9/11. This of course is not the light-hearted pop culture reading that I’m used to. But it is […]
