Pale Rider: The Spanish Flu of 1918 and How it Changed the World

Pale Rider: The Spanish Flu of 1918 and How it Changed the World by Laura Spinney

May 10, 2019 by badkittyuno 2 Comments

Another flu book! Like Albert Marrin’s Very, Very, Very Dreadful, Pale Rider is an investigation into the Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918-1919. Unlike Marrin’s work, however, Spinney goes more global. When Marrin focused a lot on how the Spanish flu affected World War I (and vice versa), Spinney looks at how it affected the world. She also looks more into the future — the question of a re-occurrence of a similar pandemic not if, it’s when. “Between the first case recorded on 4 March 1918, and […]

Bring Me Back

Bring Me Back by B.A. Paris

May 9, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I really enjoyed B.A. Paris’s other two novels, The Breakdown and Behind Closed Doors. They’re a little ridiculous — the kind of plotting and villains that work so well in thrillers but ONLY in thrillers. Bring Me Back is that same style of thriller, but it REALLY veers into soap opera territory. I’m not 100% sure it was Paris’s first novel, but it definitely reads like one. 10 years ago, Finn and Layla go on vacation, and Layla disappears at a rest stop. In present day, Finn — […]

The Neuroscientist Who Lost Her Mind: My Tale of Madness and Recovery

The Neuroscientist Who Lost Her Mind: My Tale of Madness and Recovery by Barbara K. Lipska

May 9, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Barbara K. Lipska had something incredibly unlikely happen to her — after years of studying the brain, she herself began to experience neurological symptoms. Although it took quite a while for her to realize and then come to terms with the symptoms she was experiencing, this did allow her to eventually be able to describe what the disorders she had been studying for years felt like from within. “Emotions, which form the foundations of our personalities, are not contained in a single brain region, as […]

Lethal White (Cormoran Strike #4)

Lethal White (Cormoran Strike #4) by Robert Galbraith, J.K. Rowling

May 9, 2019 by badkittyuno 3 Comments

Don’t expect any kind of impartial review of this book — I love these characters so much that there’s no chance I’m going to be objective. This review will likely contain spoilers for the first three in the series, so be warned! “Sometimes, acting as though you’re all right, makes you all right. Sometimes you’ve got to slap on a brave face and walk out into the world, and after a while it isn’t an act anymore, it’s who you are.” Lethal White has two […]

I don’t even bother making resolutions any more..

New Year, Same Trash: Resolutions I Absolutely Did Not Keep (A Vintage Short Original) by Samantha Irby

May 9, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

New Year, same trash is another book I discovered on Kindle unlimited. It is by one of favorite writers at the moment, Samantha Irby. It is a list of 70 resolutions, what she calls micro resolutions, that she basically fails at one after the other. It’s very funny. She’s a funny writer. I’m kind of bummed I didn’t get to listen to it as an audiobook since I like her voice even more than her writing, but such as life. “48. Try to think positively. […]

Tim Kaine would totally wear white Rockports

Tim Kaine Is Your Nice Dad: a work of dad fiction by Sara Benincasa

May 9, 2019 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

This book was so cute. This book was so cute that while doing this review, I went back and read it again. I first discovered its existence during the 2016 election. I haven’t been able to find a copy anywhere until recently when it popped up on Kindle unlimited. So if you have Kindle unlimited, you can read this cute little thing for free. If you do pay for it, Benincasa will donate the proceeds to help mentor foster kids, though, which is pretty cool. […]
