The Great Halifax Explosion: A World War I Story of Treachery, Tragedy, and Extraordinary Heroism by John U. Bacon

July 9, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

History/Schmistory Well, the great thing about having a 65 book backlog is I can almost certainly fill a board. The bad thing is — reviewing 65 books… This book was really good though so it’s a great place to start! The Halifax explosion took place in 1917 (history!) and truly changed the world — the aftermath of the explosion affected medicine, World War I, nuclear science and the relationship between the United States and Canada. It also took over 2,000 lives, and caused thousands of […]

“We are the books we read and the things we love.”

Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley

May 29, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

This is a really sweet novel, set in a rather magical bookstore. It’s almost too sweet, but the author balances out the poems and hidden notes with a girl recovering from a tragedy, and it plays perfectly. “There should be a disconnect button you can push when someone leaves: you’ve fucked me over; therefore I no longer love you. I’m not asking for the button to be connected to an ejector seat that removes them from the universe, just one small button that removes them from […]

How is this my first Jen Lancaster book?

Stories I'd Tell in Bars by Jen Lancaster

May 29, 2019 by badkittyuno 2 Comments

Jen Lancaster has written a lot of memoirs, and I’ve somehow never picked one up. This e-book ended up accompanying me on a camping trip, and it was a fun read. None of the tales were particularly life-changing, but as a collection, it was as advertised — like hanging out with a friend at a bar, telling stories. Apparently she chose to self-publish this collection after it was turned down by her usual publishers. That had to have stung, after years of success, but no […]

Salt to the Sea

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

May 29, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

[spoilers for real life history events that you might not already be familiar with that affect our characters…] One thing that amazes me about World War II is how many stories remain untold. And that’s terrifying, because as we get further from that time, and lose more survivors, we are less likely to ever hear those stories. Ruta Sepetys’s Salt to the Sea focuses on refugees fleeing East Prussia, as the Red Army advanced. While her characters are fictional, their stories are real. “Guilt is a […]

The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon by David Grann

May 29, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

This is the story of Percy Fawcett, a British explorer who went missing in the Amazon in the 1920s. It’s told by journalist David Grann, who follows Fawcett’s path in an effort to find out what happened to him. Unfortunately for Grann, and the book, he’s not nearly as interesting as the man whose steps he’s tracing — but he occupies way more content in the book. “Explorers are not, perhaps, the most promising people with whom to build a society. Indeed, some might say […]

Courage to Soar: A Body in Motion, A Life in Balance

Courage to Soar: A Body in Motion, A Life in Balance by Simone Biles

May 22, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Simone Biles is the best. She’s smart and talented and spunky and let’s face it, adorable. She may not be the world’s best writer, but she is a child and therefore the slightly childish tone of this memoir can be excused. It’s hard not to smile along with her joy. “I wanted every child, regardless of race, to be able to look at my Worlds win and say, I can dream big too. I wanted them to know that following your dreams—not just in gymnastics, but […]
