CBR11Bingo: Not My Wheelhouse (The Good Luck Girls of Shipwreck Lane) + Two More

The Good Luck Girls of Shipwreck Lane by Kelly Harms

The Overdue Life of Amy Byler by Kelly Harms

Matchmaking for Beginners by Maddie Dawson

August 14, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

The Good Luck Girls of Shipwreck Lane is definitely not the kind of book I normally read (Not My Wheelhouse!), despite the fact that, like SisterCoyote “I’m very much a book magpie” (love that!). The Good Luck Girls of Shipwreck Lane looks like something your mom would read at the beach. And while I have nothing against your mom, a story about two girls who win a contest that changes their lives forever and takes place somewhere called Christmas Cove, Maine would not normally be […]

CBR11Bingo: Illustrated (Lore) and 3 other books I didn’t particularly like

The World of Lore: Monstrous Creatures by Aaron Mahnke

I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid

Mostly Dead Things by Kristen Arnett

Heads Will Roll by Kate McKinnon, Emily Lynne

August 14, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I’ve lumped these four together because I didn’t really like any of them (as much as that pains me, Kate McKinnon, because I do love YOU) and it’s so hard to write reviews on meh books. So I’m going to bust these out, then move onto some books I really liked. The World of Lore: Monstrous Creatures (The World of Lore #1) by Aaron Mahnke — my “Illustrated” Square This book was SO highly rated on Goodreads, and I really did not like it, but I’m not […]

CBR11Bingo: Award Winner (and 2 others)

Vox by Christina Dalcher

Dry by Neal Shusterman, Jarrod Shusterman

The Dispatcher by John Scalzi, Zachary Quinto (Narrator)

August 14, 2019 by badkittyuno 2 Comments

I’ve grouped 3 reviews here — all are “in the not so distant future, the world will be even shittier than it is now” stories. John Scalzi’s The Dispatcher won an Audie for Zachary Quinto’s narration, so that’s my “Award Winner!” Square. Vox by Christina Dalcher I don’t normally read books that have a less than 3.8 rating on Goodreads. That seems to be about my threshold for enjoying something. Vox has about a 3.6, but it was highly recommended on THIS site so I […]

No disrespect to Bridget Jones, but Queenie is so much more

Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams

August 14, 2019 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

I posted four reviews yesterday but I also finished two books so I figure at this rate I’ll be wrapping up my backlog around 2021… Queenie! Another good one. This is the book that everyone has been comparing to Bridget Jones Diary, until they actually read it.  The main characters are single women in Britain, but that’s about where the similarities end. The big difference is that Queenie is so much more complex and developed than Bridget Jones (no offense, Bridget — I do love […]

CBRBingo11: Remix

The Mere Wife by Maria Dahvana Headley

August 13, 2019 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

This was a GOOD BOOK, y’all. It definitely broke my streak of meh thrillers. It’s also a retelling of Beowulf (a book I remember WAY more of than I expected to, considering I read it almost 20 years ago) which makes it my Remix! bingo square. “Listen,’ someone whispers into my ear. ‘Listen to me.’ Am I dead? ‘Listen,’ the voice whispers. ‘In some countries, you kill a monster when it’s born. Other places, you kill it only when it kills someone else. Other places, you let […]

“Watching is like nature photography: You don’t interfere with the wildlife.”

The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn

August 13, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

This is a decent thriller that relies heavily on references to 1940s and 50s noir like Rear Window — the main character spends her time watching old movies and spying on her neighbors. Due to a combination of psych drugs, alcohol, and people lying to her, to call her an unreliable narrator would be an understatement. Gaslight definitely comes to mind, as does the much more recent The Girl on the Train. “I think of Dr. Brulov in Spellbound: “My dear girl, you cannot keep bumping your […]
