“Optimism is a sliver of glass in your heart.”

November 17, 2015 by badkittyuno 2 Comments

Karin Slaughter’s Pretty Girls is violent, terrifying and heartbreaking. No happy endings here, but plenty of suspense and tension, if you’re into that sort of thing. “You couldn’t turn on the TV without hearing about the missing teenage girl. Sixteen years old. White. Middle class. Very pretty. No one ever seemed quite as outraged when an ugly woman went missing.” 20 years ago, pretty college student Julie Carroll disappeared. Shortly after, her sisters (Lydia & Claire) had a major falling out and stopped speaking to each […]

“Hell may have all the best composers, but heaven has all the best choreographers.”

November 17, 2015 by badkittyuno 2 Comments

Can I just copy and paste all of my favorite quotes from this book instead of writing a review? It would take 10x as long, but would be 100x more likely to convince people to read one of my favorites of all time! “God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of His own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players [i.e. everybody], to being involved in an obscure and complex variant of poker […]

Serious talks about funny stuff

November 17, 2015 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I really, really liked certain areas of this book, and skimmed through others. It basically depended on my interest in the interviewee. But I think there’s a good amount of interesting information in here for just about any fan of comedy. “There’s very little work where the work and the reward are simultaneous, and comedy is that.” Like Narfna said, this isn’t really a funny book — it’s a serious look at funny people. Judd Apatow gives us a bit of his own background, which […]

All the Light We Cannot See

November 17, 2015 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I finally got a copy of this one (I’ve been seeing recommendations for it for months) and it absolutely lived up to all the hype! “When I lost my sight, Werner, people said I was brave. When my father left, people said I was brave. But it is not bravery; I have no choice. I wake up and live my life. Don’t you do the same?” All the Light We Cannot See follows two young people in the years leading up to and during World War II. We meet Marie-Laure, […]

Added 1/2 a star just for the cute cover

November 13, 2015 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Is that not the greatest cover ever? The book doesn’t quite live up to it, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Maria finally convinces her father to let her spend a year in New York with her estranged mother — partly to get to know her mother, partly to get away from some bad kids in the rural town where she’s living with her dad. Maria’s grandmother enrolls her in a fancy prep school, Maria packs her things, and she moves to New York. Of course, things don’t […]

I get the obsession, if not the subject

November 10, 2015 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I like Patton Oswalt — his guest spots on various shows (Parks & Rec, for one) have always cracked me up, and while I don’t do the Twitter, I always enjoy seeing his funny tweets when they go viral. Sadly, a general like for a funny dude did not translate to great love for his book about film — but if you’re a film buff (I am not, although I do love a good — meaning bad — disaster movie), you might want to check this […]
