Girls on the Verge by Sharon Biggs Waller

September 6, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

The writing in this book is very simple, but that makes the extremely powerful story it’s telling feel much more accessible. Despite the rather adult nature of the topic, it feels like it’s written to a slightly younger audience than most of the YA fiction I read. Which is good, in my opinion. This is the kind of book both girls and boys should be able to read and understand before they reach high school. “Thirty minutes feels like forever when you’re standing in a […]

CBR11Bingo: Banned Books and Back to School

A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo by Jill Twiss, E.G. Keller (Illustrator)

From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg

September 6, 2019 by badkittyuno 2 Comments

I’ve almost got this thing blacked out! Here are two CBRBingo11 reviews — both books courtesy of my children. CBR11Bingo: Banned Books — A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo by Jill Twiss, E.G. Keller (Illustrator) I can’t remember who got this for my kids — I want to say it was Caitlin_D, but I might be wrong. The thing is, I have many wonderfully liberal and subversive friends and family who would all jump at the chance to buy my boys a book […]

And this one is just a grab bag!

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky

Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

We Sold Our Souls by Grady Hendrix

September 5, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

We’ve got space spiders, a magical mystery, a serial-killer, and a literal deal with the devil. How’s that for a grab bag? (2 stars) Children of Time (Children of Time #1) by Adrian Tchaikovsky I REALLY wanted to like this. I am mad that I didn’t. Set in the future, Children of Time takes place after humans have finished destroying the Earth. A spaceship takes off with the last of humanity in suspended animation, heading towards a planet that has been terraformed in preparation for […]

This post is a grab bag of fiction

Where the Forest Meets the Stars by Glendy Vanderah

A Lily in the Light by Kristin Fields

The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton

September 5, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

So I’ve got three fiction novels to review here — all of which are kind of hard to classify, which is how they ended up here… (4 stars) Where the Forest Meets the Stars by Glendy Vanderah I didn’t really know what to expect from this one, but I ended up really liking it. The writing was lovely and the characters were very realistically portrayed. “If she’d learned one thing in the last two years, it was that life could be hard enough without adding […]

I listen to way too many mediocre thrillers on audio book

Need to Know by Karen Cleveland

Hide and Seek (Criminal Profiler #1) by Mary Burton

Her Last Word by Mary Burton

I Am Watching You by Teresa Driscoll

The Night Before by Wendy Walker

The Forgotton Ones by Steena Holmes

September 3, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I signed up for a free trial of Kindle Unlimited, which I’m mostly enjoying. I also have a subscription to Libby through my library. These freebies add up to me listening to a LOT of “thrillers”, most of which aren’t terribly thrilling. Yet I keep downloading them, because sometimes they’re amazing (The Butterfly Collector! Burying the Honey Suckle Girls!). But mostly they fall right in that 3 star range that’s so hard to review. I’m only 21 reviews behind right now and determined not to […]

Semi-good audio books elevated by an excellent narrator

Until the Day I Die by Emily Carpenter

Burying the Honeysuckle Girls by Emily Carpenter

The Weight of Lies by Emily Carpenter

August 30, 2019 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

These three Emily Carpenter are pretty good for what they are: thrillers, set in the South (Alabama and Georgia mostly), starring women with names like Althea and Shorie who end up in peril due (largely) to family secrets. Like Southern Gothic-light. What elevated these three for me (or at least Burying the Honeysuckle Girls and The Weight of Lies — Until the Day I Die is really pretty ridiculous) was the narrator. I listened to all three on Audible, and Kate Orsini imbues each novel […]
