Review roundup! Female-centric thillers

December 13, 2018 by Aquillia Leave a Comment

I badly need to catch up with writing reviews, but don’t really have the inclination to write long and individual reviews for books that were mostly ‘meh’. I sometimes pick up thrillers when I need a break from fantasy, and this review covers several that I’ve read since the early summer, in order that I read them. In some cases I have to cast my mind back rather a long way–and some definitely made an impression more than others. Most of these I read pretty […]

Compelling mystery with a supernatural twist

December 4, 2018 by Aquillia 2 Comments

Now that Bingo is over, I’m getting around to reviewing all the books I read this summer and autumn that didn’t fit into Bingo Squares. One of my favourites–an unexpected favourite–was The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle (or, as I believe it is called in the US, The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle). When I found the link on Amazon, it was rated #1 for science fiction. I don’t think that’s an apt comparison, however, because part of the charm of this book is that it […]

Been on my Backlog for a while, but sort of wish I’d never read it (BINGO 2!)

November 16, 2018 by Aquillia Leave a Comment

Upon realizing that I could get a Bingo by filling in the ‘Backlog’ square, I went searching through my Kindle library for something I’d bought ages ago but never actually read. This resulted, a little oddly, in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. I’d bought it years back when it was quite popular, but never actually read it. For those who don’t know the story, it’s about a sixteen year old boy named Jacob who grew up on his grandfather’s strange stories and accompanying photos about […]

Definitely not my wheelhouse, but thought-provoking nonetheless (BINGO finally!)

November 7, 2018 by Aquillia Leave a Comment

Brave New World fills the Not My Wheelhouse square, which means… BINGO! At last! I didn’t actually know that much about Brave New World when I decided to read it (well, listen to the audiobook). I think I expected it to be more about struggling to bring down a dystopian system rather than struggling (or not) within a dystopian system. I didn’t expect a satire, and I didn’t really expect the end to be so hopeless. In a way, the satire aspect makes it even less my wheelhouse than I […]

Another delightful Pratchett (Bingo square: Listicles)

November 2, 2018 by Aquillia 1 Comment

Hot on the heels of Guards! Guards!, I turned to Mort for my next gym audiobook (although I didn’t actually listen to much of this one in the gym). Mort also happens to be #65 on the The Big British Read list of 200 books, which means I can tag this review for the Listicles bingo square! (Guards! Guards! is listed at #69 and Good Omens at #68, and there are 12 other Pratchett books on this list, more than any other author. Roald Dahl, in comparison, has […]

I really wanted that darn centre square

October 25, 2018 by Aquillia 3 Comments

I never would have read this book if it weren’t for Cannonball Bingo. Also, I never would have had to read this book if it weren’t for Cannonball Bingo. (And my damn completionist streak, like when I try to finish every sidequest in a Zelda game.) I had a different reading experience for every quarter of this book. The first quarter was spent like “eh, this isn’t really my thing, but I’ll give it to the 25% mark.” The second quarter was spent like “okay, […]
