Aquillia's Reviews:

Forget superheroes; supervillains is where it’s at

Vengeful by V. E. Schwab

January 3, 2020 by Aquillia Leave a Comment

Vengeful is the followup to V. E. Schwab’s delightful Vicious, which I quick-reviewed at the end of 2018 and gave 4.5 stars to (warning, spoilers ahead for Vicious.) Vengeful continues the story of Victor Vale and Eli Ever, two ‘superheroes’ who veer into supervillainy. Schwab neatly gets around the whole hero/villain dichotomy by just calling all her super-powered characters ‘ExtraOrdinaries’. EO’s, as they’re abbreviated, are given their powers when they are resurrected (usually by medical means) from death, and their power relates to the circumstances that killed […]

Definitely a bro-fantasy, but with far more charm (#Reader’s Choice–BINGO!)

Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames

October 31, 2019 by Aquillia Leave a Comment

Having only a few hours left to finish Bingo, and not yet quite having a bingo, I’m using Reader’s Choice in lieu of True Story–because I’m not the sort of person who enjoys reading True Stories anyway. So, Bingo! (Bingo across the top row: Remix, Reader’s Choice [for True Story], Far and Away, Youths!, Reading the TBR). Several months ago, I read the highly-recommended-online Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames (also with Aquillius from my previous review, AKA my husband). We both love fantasy, and […]

One of Poirot’s most far-flung cases: an interview (#TwoHeadsAreBetterThanOne)

Appointment with Death by Agatha Christie

October 24, 2019 by Aquillia 4 Comments

I’ve recently introduced my husband to the Poirot TV series and then to the books, because there were some episodes I refused to let him see until after he had read the book. We ended up getting some of the audiobooks, because he’s a big fan of the format, so we’ve listened so far to Death on the Nile, Appointment with Death, and the Murder of Roger Ackroyd. For #Two Heads are Better than One, I decided to interview him on Appointment with Death, which […]

Not sure if it’s me, the genre, or the book… #SummerRead

Gone Viking by Helen Russell

October 20, 2019 by Aquillia 1 Comment

…but I’m inclined to think it’s the book. I picked up Gone Viking earlier this summer for my book club (we’re all internationals living in a city in Denmark, and we chose this one because of links with Denmark). I was willing to give it a go, even though I never really read chick lit. (Note: not dissing the genre at all, just saying it’s usually not the sort of thing that interests me!) Since no one among us liked it (and others didn’t even finish), […]

Once more I dive into the breach of Sarah J. Maas’ overly sexual YA (#Remix)

Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

October 20, 2019 by Aquillia Leave a Comment

So after hate-reading most of Sarah J. Maas’ Throne of Glass series last year (haven’t been able to get through the last one yet), I decided to embark on reading her Court of whatevers series, because I needed something fluffy and vaguely risque.  (Important note: I do NOT mean it dismissively when I say something is fluffy. Just because it is written largely for teenage girls does not mean it is therefore automatically inferior!) I actually enjoyed it much more than I expected–at least until […]

Another super-addictive teen mystery (#Youths!)

Two Can Keep a Secret by Karen M. McManus

October 19, 2019 by Aquillia Leave a Comment

Before I write the review for Karen M. McManus’ new book Two Can Keep a Secret, I want to urge everyone to check out her first book: One of Us is Lying, which was one of the best books I read a few years ago. Tightly plotted, with a great solution, and characters that actually felt like real teens. I absolutely loved it and highly recommend it to anyone who likes YA and mysteries/thrillers. Because of the category, I’m tagging this as my #Youths! bingo square. Or […]
