An Oldie But Goodie…Vampire Tale

December 10, 2014 by anevilweasel Leave a Comment

This is one of my old favorites – just reread it so I thought I would write a review.   “Blood Price” is the first of the “Blood Books”series. I would recommend them all – they form a good story arc.  If you want to keep on going, Tanya Huff has follow on stories in the “Smoke and Ashes” series that I would also recommend. This book falls into the category of “urban fantasy” but it is an early example of the genre as it was written […]

Station Eleven: Clever Post Apocalyptic Tale

December 9, 2014 by anevilweasel 4 Comments

There have been so many post apocalyptic novels out there that I now tend to avoid them. It’s become such an overused trope – right up there with vampires and zombies and…well you get the idea.   However this one seemed special so I took a chance.   Worth it. The story starts out  just before the onset of the apocalypse ( “The Georgia Flu)  with the sudden death of an aging Hollywood actor one snowy night while he is playing “King Lear”.  An EMT in […]

Don’t go “Whalin”…..

December 9, 2014 by anevilweasel Leave a Comment

This book seemed to have such promise.   It sounded very “Christopher Moore” from the description.  The reviews were excellent and declared it as the funniest book…. I suppose that should be a warning. Or maybe its me perhaps if I were a stone male college student who hadn’t yet read Christopher Moore novesl, I would  liked it. So it started out OK but seemed to go downhill quickly with some side plots that just got in the way .     The premise is […]

“Go write me a thriller based on dark matter that doesn’t insult my intelligence”

December 9, 2014 by anevilweasel Leave a Comment

“Go write me a thriller based on dark matter that doesn’t insult my intelligence” This is that book  – definitely out of the ordinary and hard to put down.    Our hero Robert is a physicist who, working on series of dark matter experiments, has come very close to a breakthrough.  Suddenly his company’s funding is cut and he and his teammates finds themselves unemployed. Add to this his girlfriend  Cora is going through her own trauma after recently losing her sister.  She deals with this loss and Robert’s trauma […]

It’s Frankenstein’s Monster! Hunting Other Monsters!

November 20, 2014 by anevilweasel Leave a Comment

This is the third in a series of the chronicles of “MHI”  –  “Monster Hunters International”.  This is a very action oriented series, it has witty dialogue, excellent character development and a lot of brutal violence. So be warned. The author is very detailed in his portrayal of tactical weapons; guns, knives, ammo, etc.  Not much of a surprise as he lists his occupations as gun dealer, firearms instructor and owns a company that contracts weapons work to the movie biz.    Even if you […]

The Bureau of Supernatural Investigations – Wicked Fun Urban Fantasy

November 20, 2014 by anevilweasel Leave a Comment

Picked this one up on a whim  – disclosure – this review refers to the Audible version.   Rip-roaring fun. Tales from the Bureau of Supernatural Investigations (BSI) . The guys that keep you from the things that go bump in the night.  Our hero –   “Kal Hakala” –  is a Finn-American who is the lead of a team of BSI Agents.   The “macguffin” of the tale is a murderer called “the organ donor” who kills people in a manner similar to butchering hogs […]
