The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

The Dragon Republic by R.F. Kuang

The Burning God by R.F. Kuang

May 19, 2023 by anana 2 Comments

I embarked on The Poppy War series by R.F. Kuang after seeing it on some  “best new fantasy series” list or another, and I decided to read through all three books despite finding it a rocky go occasionally. Ultimately, I’m very happy to have read these books and I’m impressed by Kuang’s fearlessness as a storyteller – but I don’t think I’m likely to add these to my “re-read” pile any time soon! I don’t know how to review this whole series without including quite […]

A Master of Djinn by P. Djéli Clark

April 30, 2023 by anana 1 Comment

I read the previous novella in this series, A Dead Djinn in Cairo,  and really enjoyed the world that P. Djeli Clark created in it. I have a few friends that, whenever we get together, we compare “what we’ve been reading” lists, and in one of those conversations a friend brought up A Master of Djinn, and based on her recommendation and my previous experience with the author’s work I immediately added the book to my Libby queue.  Picking up a bit after the initial […]

“Isn’t it a merry thing to cheat death?”

Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo

April 14, 2023 by anana Leave a Comment

I read and reviewed the first book in the Alex Stern series, Ninth House, last year (AKA 2021, the Year of I Became a Leigh Bardugo Superfan), and I’ve been eagerly awaiting the second book in the series ever since. Hell Bent finally came off of my Libby queue last week, and I pretty much abandoned all other responsibilities (including sleeping..) until I had consumed this new adventure.  Hell Bent follows the same structure as Ninth House, opening with our main character, Alex, in a […]

A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers

March 17, 2023 by anana 1 Comment

The previous book in the Monk and Robot series by Becky Chambers was one of the first books I read and reviewed in 2023, and I adored it. I immediately put a hold on the second (and so far, last) book in the series, A Prayer for the Crown-Shy. I eagerly waited for it to make it through my queue, fully confident that I would love it based on my feelings for the first book as well as my experiences with Chambers’ Wayfarers series.  After […]

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Cress by Marissa Meyer

Winter by Marissa Meyer

March 1, 2023 by anana Leave a Comment

I picked up the first book of Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles, Cinder, after one of my coworkers recommended it by telling me how much her 12-year-old loved the book. I was craving a fast-paced book that would be the right amount of complex to be interesting but still simple enough to follow in audiobook form.  Also I figured – if it’s good enough for the 12-year-old, it’s good enough for me!  The Lunar Chronicle books absolutely fulfilled my requirements, and after enjoying Cinder I went […]

A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers

February 2, 2023 by anana 4 Comments

I adored Becky Chambers’ The Wayfarers series, so when I found out that she had a newer series I jumped at the chance to put it in my Libby queue. While it took a while to work its way into my grubby hands (err e-reader), it actually ended up being the absolutely perfect book to read in January: A Psalm for the Wild-Built is a calm, sweet novella in the midst of the “new year, new you” advertisements being hurled my direction elsewhere. Sibling Dex […]
