Upon his death, Astrid Lethewood’s father, Albert, left her a house she never knew he owned. She, like everybody else, thought he was the town wastrel, spending his wife’s money on booze and things from junk shops. Still, Astrid loved her father and wants to build a home, a family, in this house he left her. First her step-brother Jacks moves in, running away from the expectations of his father, the town fire chief. Then Astrid’s oldest friend Sahara calls, saying that her boyfriend cheated […]
Objectivity is for the weak.
I’m going to try hard to be objective and coherent in this review, but I make no promises because I love this book to a ridiculous degree and it’s hard not to just post, “ZOMG I LOVE IT, READ IT AND TALK ABOUT THE FEEEEEEELS WITH ME.” But since I really do want people to read this book (and the rest of the series!), I will give coherency a go. Blue Sargent is sixteen years old and the only girl born into her family with […]
This book is too boring for me to come up with a good title.
I read Marie Lu’s Legends trilogy and was largely “eh” about it. They weren’t the worst written thing I’d ever read, but they weren’t terribly creative and the characters were boring. But when I saw Ms. Lu had written the first book in a new series, I thought I would give it a go. “The Young Elites is fantasy, it could be interesting. Legends was YA dystopian, I could just be burnt out on those, they’re everywhere right now.” So I swear I went into The Young […]
“We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch – we are going back from whence we came.” – John F. Kennedy
It’s hard not be retroactively frustrated with this book when after finishing it I read the author information and found out that Ms. Dallamonica is gay but wrote a novel where her heronie only has straight romances. “I already have Tanya Huff in my life,” I thought. But I realize that that isn’t fair (to either Ms Dallamonica or Ms. Huff, who is an author that I adore (have you guys read her Valor series? Go read the Valor series.)) given the realities of getting […]
Repetitive and sexist but not terrible for all that.
This is technically a review of the last book in two connected series but it can stand as a review of all ten books in both the The Belgariad and The Malloreon series. Because, let’s face it, they’re all more or less the same book. Now, unless it is loving satire written by Diana Wynne Jones, I am not typically a huge fan of quest fantasy. I find quest fantasy to be old-fashioned, trope-y, and sexist. And the books of David and Leigh Eddings hit […]
I’m verbose when I hate something.
Let’s start this off honestly. I only picked up this book because I’m trying to be less of a snob. Both about this type of fantasy (urban pop romance, I would call it) and about authors who are as prolific as Ms. Day (the first three books of this series were published in the same year). Eve of Darkness did nothing to dispel my disdain for this type of novel because Eve of Darkness is terrible on many, many levels. Basically all of them that […]
