I really can’t review books like this very well and my failure to do so has resulted me being nearly two months behind in my reviews, so it’s past time to just bang something out and apologize to Gail Honeyman for not giving it my best efforts. Synopsis from Goodreads: “Eleanor Oliphant is a bit of an odd ball. She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. That, combined with her unusual appearance (scarred cheek, sometime wearer of an […]
Hoping for more out of this than I’m getting.
The Witcher series, I must say off the bat, isn’t really sticking with me. I’m enough of a completist that I’m going to finish it (and I received the last book in the series as a gift from someone who didn’t know it was the last book in a series) but it’s not quite coming together in a way that has me very excited about the world or the characters. The first two books in the series were actually collections of short stories that were […]
Bigotry and fundamentalism make for a bad mix
I’m on the books as being a fan of Jon Krakauer, so as someone who is not very familiar with Mormonism beyond that South Park Episode, I was beyond curious to read his take on the history of Mormonism and the ways that certain ingrained aspects of the faith can somewhat naturally progress into the type of extremism that causes two brothers to brutally murder their sister in-law and her child because they believed they were following God’s orders. In general, one of the ways […]
“You should have fallen in love with a happy man, if you wanted happiness. But no, you had to fall for the breathtaking beauty of pain.”
The Vorkosigan Saga is one of those classic SF series that has been a little intimidating to me because there are so many books in the series, and the suggested reading order of the series is not the publication order, so it doesn’t naturally lend itself toward easily identifying the “next” book in the series. Cordelia’s Honor is actually an omnibus edition comprised of Shards of Honor (Vorkosigan #1) and Barrayar (Vorkosigan #7)(???) Here’s a short plot description from Goodreads for both of those: Shards […]
Another 5-star review from this Expanse stan
This series has become essentially un-reviewable for me. I give every installment either four or five stars, and I have the same good things to say about every one. Without digging deeper into more specific plot points, which I don’t tend to do in my reviews, there aren’t a lot of new ways to praise overall themes or achievement in character development. However, Persepolis Rising is actually a bit different from its predecessors, particularly in that last respect. It opens after a considerable time-jump from […]
I think I have been bamboozled by this series
I had an unexpectedly bad reaction to this book, considering that I had relatively enjoyed the previous two books in the Call of Crows series. My impression of The Unyielding was so bad, in fact, that I don’t just think this was a bad installment in the series, but it has me questioning my taste over my higher ratings of the first two books. I’d re-read them to be sure I’m not crazy, but I don’t want to be proven right. I re-read my old […]
