An underwhelming collaboration from some greats

Disclaimer: I received this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Black Trillium was first published in the early nineties, a joint effort of three respected fantasy authors now turning their collective attentions toward a trio of three royal sisters who are fated to restore balance to the world. It’s now being republished with a neat new cover but, unfortunately, the formulaic story with three heroines who may as well be stock characters for all of the depth they do not possess is […]

To sleep, perchance to dream

Night Beach (4.5 stars) is about a one very simple thing. A girl surfer-slash-artist has a crush on a boy surfer who sees her — sometimes. But it’s also about a few other very complicated, possibly unreal things, which make this book overall very hard to define. Abbie likes Kane; this much is clear. In fact, she’s obsessed with him, in that painfully teenage way that grovels for the tiniest morsel of acknowledgement and acceptance. This kid, Kane, is a few years older, stays in […]

My skepticism comes first

Disclaimer: I received this ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I believe many people are familiar with the meme (courtesy of South Park) that more or less goes: Step One ??? Profit! Well, the minds behind Consilience/Positron in this book have adopted that mantra as a lifestyle and business model. The proposal is this: crime is bad, and in a recession — particularly an extended one as has befallen the world — crime rises, and the jails become overpopulated and create an […]

“Questions arose. Like, what in the f*ck was going on here, basically.”

It seemed like a good point in the Cannonball to dip my toe back into the elite Infinity Pool of highbrow reading — you know, capital L Literature — and Pynchon seemed like as good of a candidate for Respected Contemporary Author as any of them. But then of course I end up reading the book of his where the protagonist is altered on one of the many favorite substances of the sixties for most of the book and it’s generally about crime and hippies […]

Everything makes so much sense now

A Week to be Wicked, the second book in the Spindle Cove series, was among the first Regency romances I picked up that wasn’t Courtney Milan (obligatory Malin’s Top 100 Romances namedrop, since I found it there!) For whatever reason, it took me some time to get through the rest of the series, until now, where I suspect I have finished with its weakest entries. A Night to Surrender (3.5 stars) sets up the entire Spindle Cove premise and introduces all of the main players. There is […]

Hangups and hangovers

June 22, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 1 Comment

I do not know what do make of the cover model’s hairstyle, which looks very 2008 to me. Similarly, I had some trouble with this book, which in my view did not compare favorably to its two predecessors in this series. Let’s dig in: A Lady of Persuasion is about the spurned Sir Tobias Aldridge, whose then-fiance Sophia (from Surrender of a Siren) ran off and married some seaworthy fellow, and now Toby is put out over it and trying find comfort in his partyboy lifestyle. When […]
