I'm an animal-loving, cold-hating, sky-gazing delicate flower with far more unread books than time to read. My beautiful kitty lost her fight to an aggressive cancer last summer so I'm happy to read to help kick cancer’s butt.

Do you suppose Nearly a Lady refers to the fact that they’ve cut off the top of her head on the cover art?

Nearly a Lady by Alissa Johnson

When Winnefred Blythe was 13, her father died rescuing horses from a burning stable. As he lay dying, he asked the nearest gentleman to accept his Freddie as a ward and the Marquess of Engsly, thinking he was taking on a boy and feeling generous at having his valuable horses saved, agreed. Upon learning he had acquired a young girl, he passed along her care to his wife, who arranged for Freddie to be sent to the country in the care of another slightly older […]

Love: a perpetual state of semideranged partiality

For Real by Alexis Hall is not my normal sort of romance novel (I tend to favor quasi-historical romps). But I kept seeing people recommend it in various different places and I finally picked it up out of curiosity (the list that tipped me over was Slytherin/Hufflepuff pairings). I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It is contemporary BDSM m/m erotica but it has a compelling romance to ground it all. Laurie is a trauma doctor who is pushing 40. He sees 19 […]

This time I also say Yes

Dear Tessa Dare. I am sorry. I don’t know why I ever said I don’t like your book except that I was expecting my first Romance novel to read a certain way and yours did not and that vexed me. You are delightfully batty and I adore you. Several years ago I made Say Yes to the Marquess my first foray into Romance after decades of giving them side-eye because of cool girl brainwashing. Sadly, I was expecting something more akin to Austen and the […]

No. The answer is No.

I recently moved to the South and since I was in need of some light reading I decided a romance with some southern flair would help with the transition. I found a discussion group that mentioned Ain’t She Sweet by Susan Elizabeth Phillips and it had a lot of really good reviews so I hopped onto Amazon to purchase the whole book. I have regrets… Overall the book is…okay? I just didn’t much like the main characters. Sugar Beth Carey was the princess of the […]

Who doesn’t love a good (nearly) mad scientist?

I picked up this book because of Pajiba but in a somewhat circuitous fashion – the story about Faleena Hopkins trademarking the word “cocky” included a link to Marc Whipple’s blog, Legal Inspiration. The sidebar on his blog includes a blurb about the fact that he also writes books with a link to his Amazon writer’s page, so I took a look. His blog post was very informative and since one of his books looked like something I would enjoy I decided to pick it […]

“Her. I’ll take her.”

May 18, 2018 by alphabootoo 6 Comments

I realize upon rereading it that my last review was rather churlish about the topic of romance book covers. While I stand by the fact that I often dislike them, it was nonproductive to say so without getting into the reason why. I realize that I am new to the genre and probably an outlier regardless but I find them all confusingly similar and in the case of many historical romances, non-period to the point of distraction. I like my book covers to give a […]
