I'm TAing in creative writing, and I'm in the midst of editing my first novel. Along with CBR, I have book reviews published with "The Literary Review," short essay with "Fiction Southeast" and a forthcoming publication with "The Book Smuggler's Den." CBR has definitely helped my writing skills since now I know what readers are looking for for in their works. So, thank you, CBR! Hopefully someday, we'll be able to review my novel on this blog. :) (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Ale's Quick Questions interview.)

Religion Is Hard to Kill

This was another MFA required read, and sadly, I wasn’t really impressed by it. I’ve noticed a trend in books of this time period (Graham Greene was writing in the 20s, 30s, and early 40s) disappointing me, and I have a feeling it’s partially because I don’t understand the social temperature of that time, nor the social issues being tackled in books of that era. So this low star-rating is quite possibly not the book’s fault. I know several people, (including my professor, who did […]

Fact or Fiction?

January 26, 2016 by Ale 2 Comments

I do like that my MFA forces me to read books I wouldn’t normally pick up. While it’s not always a sure-fire way to a favorite read, “My Brilliant Friend” makes my top 10 for ‘required reading.’ A note of caution, this is a long book and is followed up by four subsequent sequels that will totally suck you in, so unless you’re willing to devote a copious slot of time to this story, beware! I was only mildly enjoying the read and thought […]

This is the Letter that Never Ends, Yes it goes on and on, my friends!

January 6, 2016 by Ale Leave a Comment

I can’t decide if I wasn’t a fan of this book because it was assigned to me and I had no choice but to read it over a four day period, or if I wasn’t a fan due to it actually not being my cup of tea. Because there were parts that I loved…truly, the writing and craft in here is absolutely beautiful. But it just sort of goes on. And on. And on. Like, you know…. The book is a letter from the narrator […]

The Last Review of 2015!!!!

December 22, 2015 by Ale 1 Comment

Another big thank you to Mathildehoegfor sending me “Trouble” in my CBR book exchange! It’s on my to-read list for the next installment of the MFA and even though I’m not usually a YA fan (especially non-fantasy YA), I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It gives nothing away for me to tell you that the main female, Hannah, pretty much begins the book as a pregnant fifteen-year-old, and is feeling, you know, overwhelmed, distraught and basically like any woman finding out about an […]

THANK YOU Mathildehoeg!

December 18, 2015 by Ale 2 Comments

A big shout out to Mathildehoeg for my awesome book exchange presents! I’ve already plowed right through “Trouble” and will be doing an annotated reading on “Atonement” for one of my MFA classes this spring. How she knew “Atonement” was one of my favorite stories, we’ll never know!   A review of both coming shortly!

The Birth of the Copper Star

December 1, 2015 by Ale 4 Comments

This was another faintingviolet specialty! She read this 2 years ago and handed it off to me, and what a fantastic read it was! I’ve just finished a re-read of it, and since it’s a mystery, it’s not as strong the second time around, but that’s more due to the lack of surprise at the outcome than Faye’s writing. But let’s get to the plot summary, Tim Wilde is a bar tender in 1845 New York City who finds himself unemployed and homeless after a […]
