I'm TAing in creative writing, and I'm in the midst of editing my first novel. Along with CBR, I have book reviews published with "The Literary Review," short essay with "Fiction Southeast" and a forthcoming publication with "The Book Smuggler's Den." CBR has definitely helped my writing skills since now I know what readers are looking for for in their works. So, thank you, CBR! Hopefully someday, we'll be able to review my novel on this blog. :) (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Ale's Quick Questions interview.)

Quiet Girl in a Noisy World: An Introvert's Story by Debbie Tung

September 10, 2019 by Ale Leave a Comment

The lovely faintingviolet read this recently, and her review prompted me to immediately request it from my library. I am an extroverted introvert (I know it sounds like an oxymoron, but it’s true), and an INFJ on the Meyers Briggs scale, so when faintingviolet said that Debbie Tung’s Quiet Girl in a Noisy World hit all the right spots for her (an also INFJ and an introvert), I decided to give this a go. I’m not usually one for graphic novels, but I’m trying new things […]

Living the Good Death

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes And Other Lessons from the Crematory by Caitlin Doughty

September 5, 2019 by Ale 1 Comment

I acquired this book. I have no idea how, or where it came from, but it’s been living on my bookshelf for three years. Maybe it was hubby’s? Maybe someone left it at our house? It got on the shelf somehow, but I don’t remember putting it there. The only clue to its origins is a receipt I found tucked in the back.  It was purchased at the Newark Airport in 2015 along with a book about biology. I did not travel anywhere in 2015, […]

1st BINGO!

Finn by Jon Clinch

August 30, 2019 by Ale Leave a Comment

Since I read Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as my classic this year, what better way to do the Remix square then to find a retelling of the book I had just finished. The original would be fresh in my mind and I’d have a place to jump off from. I found Finn at the local book barn, and since it was only $5.00 for the hardcover, what was the harm? The premise was intriguing….a whole book from Huck’s father’s perspective….and for full disclosure, I was taken […]

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

August 20, 2019 by Ale 2 Comments

I am (mostly) unashamed to admit that my first encounter with The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, or any of Mark Twain’s books, were not in school, but on my own accord after watching Disney’s 1995 “Tom and Huck.” I was twelve, smitten with the carefree, super hot (at least I thought so at the time) characters going on crazy adventures, and after the movie was over, I wanted more. I read Tom Sawyer first and loved it since the movie follows it fairly closely.  I started Huckleberry […]

HALF CANNONBALL!

Patterns of Fashions 2: Englishwomen's Dresses & Their Construction, 1860 - 1940 by Janet Arnold

August 12, 2019 by Ale 4 Comments

My boss travels a lot, which means I get amazing gifts from far away places upon his return. This year he did a study-abroad to our sister-campus over in England, and I got this amazing illustrated tutorial, Patterns of Fashion 2: 1860 – 1940, from his trip to the Fashion Museum of Bath. I got quite a laugh out of his tale of buying the book. He knew that I love to make historical clothing (there are several photos on my desk of me in […]

Hurricanes Can Be Inside, Just as Much as Outside

Hurricane Season by Nicole Melleby

August 12, 2019 by Ale Leave a Comment

I always have a little trepidation reviewing a book written by someone I know in a professional capacity, so as much as I’ve been excited to read Hurricane Season since finding out it was being published last year, I was also really worried about giving it an honest review. But not only can I say that I enjoyed it, but it was so good it made me cry the good tears and I want to ship a copy to literally every person I know.  I’m […]
