I love to read, and I love to learn. I wish I were retired so I could spend more time on my random hobbies!

Today Will Be Different by Maria Semple

July 11, 2020 by Sophia Leave a Comment

This year I am very excited to finally be taking part in Cannonball Bingo. Today Will Be Different is filling out the “Shelfie” square as a book from my bookshelf (one that sat on my shelf for way too long before I finally got around to reading it). I am lucky enough to have a friend who gets tickets to a Pen and Podium lecture series. She has invited me to a few literary lectures from visiting authors. So far, the lectures have all been very interesting. But what’s […]

The way Theranos is operating is like trying to build a bus while you’re driving the bus.

Bad Blood by John Carreyrou

May 17, 2020 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I was surprised by how much Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup (2018) by John Carreyrou drew me in. I watched the HBO documentary, The Inventor, with my man friend a while ago. I’d never heard of Theranos or Elizabeth Holmes, but it was an unbelievable story. When I first heard about the book, I wasn’t sure it would be worth reading after seeing the documentary. But I kept seeing Bad Blood all over the place. It’s on a number of “best of” lists and my […]

I found myself talking back to the audiobook

Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell

May 17, 2020 by Sophia 1 Comment

I’ve read at least four books by Malcolm Gladwell, and I’ve found them consistently interesting and educational. So, I was pretty excited when I was finally able to check out the audio version of Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know about the People We Don’t Know (2019) by Malcolm Gladwell. The audio version was billed as more of a podcast experience. Whenever possible, real audio clips of real people were used, and there was even a theme song that recurred throughout the book. It was also […]

A football romance with a little reality thrown in

Fumbled by Alexa Martin

May 14, 2020 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I initially found Alexa Martin on NPR’s annual book recommendations. I began with Intercepted, which I enjoyed enough to pick up Martin’s next book, Fumbled (2019). My reaction to Fumbled was very similar to how I felt about Intercepted. I liked that it was set in Denver by someone knowledgeable about Denver. I liked the characters, and the book made me feel some real emotion. On the other hand, I did have a couple of nit picky problems that sometimes distracted me while I was reading. Poppy Patterson is a single […]

A grand celebration of fall that I’ve never experienced

Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell & Faith Erin Hicks

May 13, 2020 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I probably first saw Pumpkinheads (2019), written by Rainbow Rowell and illustrated by Faith Erin Hicks, on the Cannonball website, but it was so long ago I can’t remember now. I’m a big fan of Rainbow Rowell, and I’ve been reading a couple more graphic novels here and there. So, Rowell’s new graphic novel seemed like a perfect choice. And it turned out to be an enjoyable story. It’s not my favorite graphic novel, and it’s not my favorite Rowell novel, but it was short and sweet […]

He who would travel happily must travel light

Nomadland by Jessica Bruder

May 12, 2020 by Sophia Leave a Comment

“Despite a lack of hard numbers, anecdotal evidence suggests the ranks of American itinerants started to boom after the housing collapse and have kept growing.” (50) I’m not sure how I first stumbled on the Youtube videos, but I love camping and traveling. I was intrigued and excited when a video showed me how to build a plywood bed so I could comfortably sleep in my Rav4 (with storage underneath!). It’s amazing to see the creativity and ingenuity of how people have turned their vehicles […]
