I’m not sure why this book is so popular

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

December 6, 2020 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I remember seeing The Silent Patient (2019) by Alex Michaelides on some “best of 2019” list somewhere. The blurb sounded pretty intriguing. A successful artist and beautiful woman is found covered in blood in her home. Her husband has been shot and killed, but the woman has not and will not utter another word. It’s pretty clear that she murdered her husband, but no one knows what really happened. The Silent Patient has 4.5 stars on Amazon, was voted best mystery of 2019 on Goodreads, and it’s apparently […]

Things We Still Don’t Talk About Today

Things We Didn't Talk About When I Was a Girl by Jeannie Vanasco

December 5, 2020 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I can’t remember how I discovered Things We Didn’t Talk About When I Was a Girl (2019) by Jeannie Vanasco although I remember that the title sounded intriguing. This book is a memoir. When the author was in college, one of her closest high school friends sexually assaulted her in a friend’s basement. Now many years later, Vanasco is not only facing her thoughts about the assault, but she has decided to interview her assailant for this book. Vanasco is very brave to bare her soul and […]

Can't Hurt Me by David Goggins

November 30, 2020 by Sophia Leave a Comment

One of my friends from school repeatedly recommended Can’t Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds (2018) by David Goggins. She said that “he’s kind of an asshole, but he has an amazing story.” And I think she was right. I’m guessing that Goggins would agree with her as well. I’d heard of David Goggins before my friend mentioned him. He’s a navy seal who once held the Guinness World Record for number of pull-ups in 24 hours, and he’s pushed himself on ultra marathons […]

Groundhog Day teen romance

Opposite of Always by Justin A. Reynolds

November 30, 2020 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I read Opposite of Always (2019) by Justin A. Reynolds a while ago now. I can’t even remember how I first heard about it, but I really enjoyed it. It’s a very original, young-adult romance novel. Still somewhat unusual in the teen romance world, it’s written by a black man, and the main roles are people of color. Jack is our protagonist. He’s had a deep crush on Jill (yes, Jack and Jill) since he ran into her on their first day of high school. Unfortunately for […]

Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler

November 9, 2020 by Sophia 1 Comment

My book club picked Vinegar Girl (2016) by Anne Tyler. It had good reviews, and I think everyone was happy that it was a relatively short novel. According to Amazon, Vinegar Girl was a result of the Hogarth Shakespeare Project. The goal was to retell works by William Shakespeare for a more modern audience. Vinegar Girl is a retelling of The Taming of the Shrew. I obviously know of The Taming of the Shrew, but I’ve never read it. I’ve heard it has problems with misogyny. However I have seen, and really enjoyed, 10 […]

“I’ve seen Steelheart bleed.”

Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson

November 7, 2020 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I heard of and picked up Steelheart (2013) by Brandon Sanderson because my boyfriend recommended it to me. I felt bad that he was reading all the books I recommended to him, and I wasn’t getting around to those he’d recommended to me. Anyway, Steelheart is the first book in the Reckoners trilogy. Sanderson imagines a world similar to ours. However, shortly after Calamity (a new star?) appeared in the sky, a number of human beings began to develop superpowers. These people were called Epics. But instead of using […]
