“Have a blessed day.”

Calypso by David Sedaris

December 14, 2021 by Sophia Leave a Comment

It’s been a while since I’ve read a book by David Sedaris, but when I saw Calypso (2018) available at the library on Audiobook, I decided it would be the perfect thing to listen to on my commute. I vaguely remember enjoying Sedaris’s other books, but this one might just be my favorite. With stories about his family, his partner, his vacation house, and his eccentricities, I was thoroughly entertained. I especially enjoyed listening to Sedaris read his book. It’s his life, after all, and his timing […]

Alcohol is bad for you

Quit Like a Woman by Holly Whitaker

December 14, 2021 by Sophia 4 Comments

I first heard of Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol (2020) by Holly Whitaker from a Cannonball review, and I was intrigued. It wasn’t the first time I’d read a book on this topic, either. Back in 2016, I found Drink by Ann Dowestt Johnston on 21 Books From The Last 5 Years That Every Woman Should Read. Johnston struggled with alcohol abuse for many years before finding her way to sobriety. She talks openly about how alcohol affected her, […]

Frustrating and disappointing on the whole

The Emotional Lives of Animals by Marc Bekoff

December 13, 2021 by Sophia 2 Comments

Ever since I read Animal Wise by Virginia Morell, I’ve been looking for more of the same. Morell’s book was eye-opening and fascinating. I hoped I had found something similar when I saw The Emotional Lives of Animals (2008) by Marc Bekoff. With a foreword by the amazing Jane Goodall, and a topic right up my alley, I began it with high expectations. Unfortunately, I still have not found a book that rivals Animal Wise. Although I agreed with most of Bekoff’s arguments, I was often frustrated by a lack […]

Another hate-to-love Romance

Love at First by Kate Clayborn

December 13, 2021 by Sophia 14 Comments

I can count on my friend for good book recommendations, so when she told me that she’d really enjoyed Love at First (2021) by Kate Clayborn, I did not hesitate. We both read many different kinds of books, but we often pass along our romance recommendations. I had high hopes for this book. This book takes place in Chicago. Dr. Will Sterling has just inherited a unit from his estranged uncle in a six-unit building filled with very eccentric, close-knit owners. Conditions of the will prohibit Will […]

“Love and Fear. The most destructive forces on Earth.”

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

December 13, 2021 by Sophia Leave a Comment

My brother gave me The Great Alone (2018) by Kristin Hannah at least two or three years ago. It looked interesting, but I have a hard time starting books I already own. I’m always distracted by new library books with due dates, as the books on my shelf sit forlorn and neglected. I finally grabbed The Great Alone when I was heading out on a solo road trip/backpacking trip, and it was the perfect choice. It had adventure, suspense, grittiness, and well-written characters. I can’t believe it took me […]

Maybe a little too close to home

Let's Never Talk About This Again by Sara Faith Alterman

December 13, 2021 by Sophia 2 Comments

Amazon describes Let’s Never Talk About This Again (2020) by Sara Faith Alterman as a “darkly funny and poignant memoir about love, loss, Alzheimer’s, and reviving her father’s pornographic writing career.” I’m not exactly sure what I was expecting after reading that, but I picked up the audiobook for two reasons. First, it sounded genuinely odd and funny, and I was curious how a daughter revives her father’s pornographic writing. Second, my father has been suffering from Alzheimer’s and a traumatic brain injury for some years now. […]
