Untamed by Glennon Doyle

December 22, 2021 by Sophia Leave a Comment

My book club decided to read Untamed (2020) by Glennon Doyle. It’s been on the New York Times Bestseller List and has over 4.5 stars on Amazon. It is a memoir discussing Doyle’s life and most recent struggles. My book club had mixed responses, trending toward the negative. I came from a slightly different perspective as I was the only one in our book club who had read Doyle’s earlier memoir, Love Warrior. I have mixed feelings about both of these books. I’d like to start with […]

Kissing the groom on his wedding day is not the best idea

Who's That Girl? by Mhairi McFarlane

December 20, 2021 by Sophia 1 Comment

I finished Just Last Night, but I apparently didn’t have my fill of Mhairi McFarlane, so I immediately picked up Who’s That Girl? (2016) in order to appreciate a little more of her writing. Like all of her books I’ve read, I enjoyed this one as well. McFarlane writes complex, emotional, fun, and entertaining romance novels. She includes some dark topics in realistic ways that make her characters feel more real and relatable. I plan on reading all of her books eventually. Edie is attending the wedding of […]

“There’s shock and then there’s grief, and there’s the simple tiring unending chore of life afterward.”

Just Last Night by Mhairi McFarlane

December 19, 2021 by Sophia 7 Comments

I have become a big fan of Mhairi McFarlane, and although I haven’t yet made it through her entire repertoire, I’m making progress. So, when I saw that Just Last Night (2021), McFarlane’s latest book was available, I snatched it up. I love McFarlane’s writing (even though she uses so many English idioms, I sometimes have a hard time understanding her). Although this wasn’t my favorite romantic story of hers, I’m very glad I read it. Eve is the main character. She is one of a quartet […]

Happiness is a warm puppy

The Puppy Primer by Patricia B. McConnell and Brenda Scidmore

December 19, 2021 by Sophia 4 Comments

We are getting a puppy! Well, my boyfriend and I are planning on getting a puppy. We’re trying to buy a house with a yard first, and that’s proving challenging. But someday. Hopefully soon. We both grew up with dogs, but this would be our first dog without parents and siblings to help take care of it. Also, I don’t think my dad used the latest and greatest training techniques. For my part, I’m pretty excited, and I’m taking my future dog ownership very seriously. […]

“Deafness is not an affliction. The only thing it stops me from doing is hearing.”

Show Me a Sign by Ann Clare LeZotte

December 17, 2021 by Sophia 1 Comment

To be honest, I think I was primarily looking for an easy, short book when I picked up Show Me a Sign by Ann Clare LeZotte. I first saw it on NPR’s Best Books of 2020 List. I enjoy the occasional children’s novel, and the history of a deaf community on Martha’s Vineyard was intriguing, so I picked it up. My knowledge of Martha’s Vineyard is not great but I still feel some connection to it. We took a memorable family trip there with my whole family when […]

Midnight in Chernobyl by Adam Higginbotham

December 17, 2021 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I’m pretty sure I first saw Midnight in Chernobyl: The Untold Story of the World’s Greatest Nuclear Disaster by Adam Higginbotham on NPR’s Best Books of 2019 List. Usually after a bunch of light romance novels, I can be in the mood for some more serious non-fiction. The Chernobyl disaster occurred on April 26, 1986 and lasted for many months afterwards. I was only seven at the time, and even as an adult I only had a vague notion of what occurred there. Besides knowing that a big disaster […]
