I love to read, and I love to learn. I wish I were retired so I could spend more time on my random hobbies!

Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty

April 28, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

At this point, I’ve read a lot of books by Liane Moriarty. I’ve liked some better than others, but I’ve found them all interesting. So, it wasn’t difficult to pick up Apples Never Fall (2021) when I saw it was at the library. Although Apples Never Fall wasn’t as compulsively readable as some of her books, there were some good characters with some dysfunctional family dynamics. Stan and Joy Delaney just sold their tennis school, and are figuring out retirement in their empty nest. Their four children: Amy, Logan, […]

Transforming a taboo into a cause

Period. End of Sentence. by Anita Diamant

April 27, 2022 by Sophia 2 Comments

I’d heard of the Netflix film, Period. End of Sentence., after it won an Oscar in 2019. I haven’t seen the film yet, but when I saw the book, Period. End of Sentence.: A New Chapter in the Fight for Menstrual Justice (2021), I thought it might be interesting and informative. I also listened to this one on audiobook because I barely have time for anything else. This was a short, informative book about how the shame of menstruation and the lack of access to menstrual products (period […]

“Only monsters call when they could text.”

Broken (in the best possible way) by Jenny Lawson

April 24, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

These days it seems the only books I have time for are audiobooks. In a desperate search for another audiobook at the library, I found Broken (in the best possible way) (2021) by Jenny Lawson. This is my first experience with Lawson, although she is a New York Times bestselling author and famous blogger. I found some parts of this book witty, some parts moving, and some parts a little trying. On the whole I definitely liked it, but it’s not one of my favorites. The most […]

Just over ten years ago, Mindy Kaling wrote a book…

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling

April 21, 2022 by Sophia 2 Comments

I am a huge fan of The Office, and I recently enjoyed the first season of Never Have I Ever (produced by Mindy Kaling). I also generally enjoy memoirs written by comedians because I find them good and entertaining writers. So, I picked up Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me (2011) on audiobook by Mindy Kaling (and read by Mindy Kaling). Kaling discusses her childhood friends, her college education at Dartmouth, her early time in New York City, doing the off-Broadway play that first got her noticed, working on The Office, […]

I would never go back to middle school

Girlhood by Melissa Febos

April 9, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I found Girlhood (2021) by Melissa Febos on NPR’s Best Books List. It’s a relatively short book, composed of essays discussing Febos’s difficult adolescence. The description stated that Febos “questions the way girls’ behaviors are controlled, and how we learn to cage and control ourselves well into adulthood.” I was impressed by Girlhood. Febos is a very good writer. She visits parts of her life that some would consider too shameful to share. But in opening up about what happened to her as a tween and teenager, she allows us […]

An action movie of a book

Mercy by David Baldacci

April 7, 2022 by Sophia 1 Comment

My soon-to-be father-in-law recommended that I read Mercy (2021) by David Baldacci. I’d never heard of the book or author, but it sounded interesting enough. I was also curious what kind of book my fiancé’s father would think I would like. To be fair, I was told that this was the fourth book in the Atlee Pine series, and I should read the other three books first. I did not, but I was also told that the fourth book is the best one. I decided that reading […]
