Robots and starships: I must be reading science-fiction

Artificial Condition by Martha Wells

June 6, 2022 by Sophia 1 Comment

Artificial Condition (2018) by Martha Wells is the second novella in her “Murderbot” series. I read the first book, All Systems Red when my science-fiction-loving friend made me–by choosing it for book club. She will be thrilled to learn that I voluntarily read Artificial Condition, and I’m now planning on reading the third. The “murderbot,” or Sec-unit, is a robot with some amount of organic parts. The bot is incredibly smart, powerful, and expensive. Sec-units are usually rented out for various security jobs, and they are controlled with governors that […]

Two sisters, two different directions

The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett

June 3, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I noticed The Vanishing Half ages ago, but there was always a ridiculously long wait for it at the library. I think I first saw it on NPR’s Best Books of 2020 and it seemed like a must-read book, so I began it with relatively high expectations. In the end, I was pretty impressed. The novel covers the 1950’s to the 1990’s and follows a number of different characters. At first, I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to get into it, but I thought Bennett did a really good […]

Dream job?

Hey Ranger! by Jim Burnett

May 27, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I found Hey Ranger!: True Tales of Humor and Misadventure from America’s National Parks (2005) when I was looking for another audiobook to read. I love camping and backpacking and I’ve been to a number of national parks. Part of me wonders if I should have been a forest/park ranger–except the ignorant tourists who litter and feed animals would drive me crazy. Jim Burnett worked at a number of different National Parks during his career. He includes stories from the big parks, like Glacier as well […]

Love story in the lab

The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood

May 18, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

My book club picked The Love Hypothesis (2021) by Ali Hazelwood for our next book. It sounded like a fun romantic comedy, so I was eager to read it. Olive is a biology Ph.D. student at Stanford, working her ass off for very little money but high ideals. In a misguided, desperate attempt to convince her best friend that she’s not interested in Jeremy–a guy she dated a couple of times (she does this because Jeremy and her best friend are perfect for each other and she […]

The plot within the plot

The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz

May 10, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

My boyfriend read The Plot (2021) by Jean Hanff Korelitz and recommended that I read it. Somehow I got it into my head that it was also one of President Obama’s recommended books from 2021, but I just checked and it’s not on his list. However, because of these recommendations (real and imagined), I started this book with pretty high expectations. It also helped that the Amazon blurbs had language like: “Insanely readable,” and “breathtakingly suspenseful,” which sounded promising. Jacob Finch Bonner is our protagonist and a […]

Short and satisfying

Must Love Hockey by Sarina Bowen

May 1, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

It’s no surprise that I picked up another romance by Sarina Bowen, especially when it involves hockey players. Must Love Hockey (2022) is a short and sweet novella that is centered around the fictional NHL team, the Brooklyn Bruisers. Although it was too short to have much of a plot besides the two love interests getting together, I enjoyed reading it. This book includes plenty of time with the hockey players, but the main character is James “Jimbo” Carozzi, and he is the equipment manager for the […]
