Bomb Shelter by Mary Laura Philpott

January 30, 2023 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Bomb Shelter: Love, Time, and Other Explosives (2022) by Mary Laura Philpot was another book I found on NPR’s List. I got it as an audiobook from my library as something to read on my commute, and I definitely enjoyed it. Philpott is a good writer and tells engaging stories about her life. She is relatable, funny, and likeable. I appreciated her generally optimistic outlook on life as well as her yearning for things to stay just as they are. However, I did come into this book […]

Murderbot does it again!

Exit Strategy by Martha Wells

January 19, 2023 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I’ve been working my way through the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. I was recently able to get the fourth book, Exit Strategy (2018) from the library. It was a quick, interesting read that added to the Murderbot story. It looks like there are currently six books in the series, with more on the way. I think at this point I’m pretty committed to the series, although I do have a hard time keeping all of the books and the humans in the story straight. So, to […]

Not quite what I was looking for

Funny You Should Ask by Elissa Sussman

January 8, 2023 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Another day, another book I found on NPR’s best books list. Funny You Should Ask (2022) by Elissa Sussman is a contemporary romance novel involving a super star stud of an actor and the reporter who interviewed him. Chani Horowitz grew up in Los Angeles and would love to prove herself as a “real” writer, although for the moment she’s thrilled that she can [barely] support herself with her writing. She gets assigned to write a flattering piece on Gabe Parker, before he begins his starring role in […]

Feminist musketeers

All For One by Lillie Lainoff

January 7, 2023 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I first saw One For All (2022) by Lillie Lainoff on NPR’s Best Books List, I was intrigued, but a little unsure. It looked like a young adult, feminist retelling of the Three Musketeers, but the protagonist was plagued by dizziness. I was curious how she would be able to fight and hopeful that the book would be good. The beginning of the book definitely drew me in. Tania de Batz is sixteen years old, living in a small, French town with her mother and […]

Everything’s more fun with kids…maybe

Nasty, Brutish, and Short: Adventures in Philosophy With My Kids by Scott Hershovitz

January 3, 2023 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I have often found philosophy frustrating at best. I’m a pretty concrete thinker, so when questions get too vague or nonsensical to me, I shake my head in annoyance and check out. But when I saw Nasty, Brutish, and Short: Adventures in Philosophy With My Kids (2022) on NPR’s latest list, I figured this might be the kind of philosophy book I can tolerate. And, on the whole, I think I did tolerate this one. In fact, I was even occasionally inspired to see how we can use philosophy […]

How many husbands might be too many?

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

December 29, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (2017) by Taylor Jenkins Reid is our most recent choice for book club. I have to admit, I wasn’t super excited by the title, cover, or blurb. I’m only a little bit interested in goings-on of Hollywood, and the novel looked a little soap opera-y to me. Fortunately, it was better than I expected! I found Evelyn to be an interesting character who had no qualms in going after whatever she wanted. The story kept me reading, and her husbands […]
