The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton

May 8, 2023 by Sophia 9 Comments

My book club picked another book that I’d never heard of and most likely would not have read without their peer pressure. The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle (2018) by Stuart Turton takes place on a run-down English estate, probably in the mid 1900’s. It is a unique mix of genres: there is a classic, Agatha Christie-esque murder mystery, a body switching main character who doesn’t know who he is or why he’s there, and a science-fiction-y explanation for everything. Our protagonist, whose name we later […]

Book Lovers by Emily Henry

April 16, 2023 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I saw Book Lovers (2022) by Emily Henry in a number of places, including NPR’s Best Books List. It looked like a clever and fun romance novel, and all of the good reviews were encouraging. It was also a nice change of pace and the perfect book to read after the disturbing and depressing School for Good Mothers that I’d just finished. Nora Stephens is a literary agent in New York City. She loves her job, she loves the city, and she loves her younger sister, Libby. Libby also lives […]

The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan

April 5, 2023 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I first saw The School for Good Mothers (2022) by Jessamine Chan on Barack Obama’s list of recommended books–although I also saw it on NPR’s Best Books List. It seemed interesting, a little feminist, and a little subversive, so I was excited to read it.I first saw The School for Good Mothers (2022) by Jessamine Chan on Barack Obama’s list of recommended books–although I also saw it on NPR’s Best Books List. How to Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis

April 5, 2023 by Sophia 1 Comment

My biggest problem with chores, cleaning, and housework is procrastination fueled by misguided perfectionism. And now that I’m married and live in a real house of adequate size, with a cute but messy dog, my workload has increased substantially. I do realize that I still have it significantly easier than many others. I do not have kids to further muck things up or disabilities that hinder me, but I still feel that I am far from accomplishing what I want. So, when I saw How to […]

“There is no greater right for a woman than having a choice.”

Take My Hand by Dolen Perkins-Valdez

April 1, 2023 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I found Take My Hand by Dolen Perkins-Valdez (2022) on NPR’s Best Books List under “eye-opening reads.” It takes place in 1973 Montgomery, Alabama where Civil Townsend, a young black woman of relative wealth starts her first nursing job at a government-run, family planning clinic. Civil travels to a one-room shack as part of her job and meets Erica and India. Erica and India are only 13 and 11 years old. Their mother recently died, and they live in cramped and unsanitary conditions with their father and grandmother. Civil’s […]

Spare by Prince Harry (Ghostwritten by J.R. Moehlinger)

April 1, 2023 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I’m definitely not one of those people obsessed with the royals. Their entire existence feels like something of a farce at this point, desperately holding on to a tradition and privilege that doesn’t really make sense anymore. At the same time, they are undeniably famous and lead a fascinating, bonkers life. I don’t follow royal news, so I only vaguely knew what was going on with Megan and Harry. When I heard they left England, I figured they were probably better off. I wasn’t really […]
