The Literary Equivalent of Junk Food

Second Grave on the Left by Darynda Jones

June 21, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’m pretty sure I’ve found the next “beach read” series I might have to work my way through before he end of the summer (or as much of it as possible). Second Grave to the Left is a fun junky supernatural mystery. Not totally original, especially the sexy stuff, but enough interestingness to keep things going. I was shelf browsing at the local library, found the final installment of the series on the “New Fiction” shelf, decided it looked interesting, so I went to find […]

The one and only time it might be ok to use first person present tense narration

Lent by Jo Walton

June 21, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I was hesitant to pick this up because it’s written in first person, present tense; I’m not much of a fan of either of those. It didn’t surprise me that I was having a hard time getting into the story. I don’t know what happened, but when I picked it up again the next day, I couldn’t put it down. Jo Walton might be a bit of a miracle worker for that. Lent is basically a fictionalized version of 1492-1498 Florence, Italy. The city was […]

The Bad Kind of Glow in the Dark

The Radium Girls by Kate Moore

June 15, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’ve noticed a bit of an interesting trend for me: I’ve started getting a little more into non-fiction. Since I work with a good bit of that kind of thing professionally, I haven’t really done much for spare time reading. And yet here I am with what could be my third(ish) non-fiction review of the year. Unlike my luck with best-selling fiction (generally poor), I seem to have done better of late with the best-selling non-fiction. The Radium Girls is non-fiction, and the best kind, […]

Best Selling Bore

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John Le Carre

June 15, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I don’t have good luck with standard best sellers or literary fiction. I decided to try Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy because the premise sounded interesting and I hear the author do a radio interview for the latest installment in the series not too long ago. My first reaction to this novel was: “How could something this boring have possibly been a best-seller?” George Smiley spends a lot of time thinking about the past, doing paperwork, and talking to random acquaintances. He used to work for […]

Murder at the Magic School

Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey

June 15, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’ve not had a lot of luck with things highly recommended and hyped by authors whose works I’ve enjoyed.  V.E. Schwab might be an exception. I found out about the impending publication of Magic For Liars from her social media, and picked it up as soon as it came out. The descriptions of the premise as something between Harry Potter and The Magicians is also reasonably accurate; another point for the book, since I frequently don’t quite agree with the blurbs either. The basic idea […]

Horrors of the Road

Alice Isn't Dead by Joseph Fink

June 8, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I heard about Alice Isn’t Dead in a review, I think maybe NPR. It sounded interesting so I picked it up. What I noticed quickly but hadn’t realized at first is that the author, Joseph Fink, is one of the Welcome to Night Vale guys; this tells you a lot about the tone and general type of story to expect if you’re familiar with either the podcast (I am not) or the first novel (which I’ve read). The novel was more openly horror than I […]
