Literary Lessons in Dystopic World

Bungo Stray Dogs vol 16 by Kafka Asagiri, Sango Harukagawa

February 28, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’ve been following this manga series for a while, and I think I was starting to go off of it since it’s pretty consistently dark but often interesting, and the balance was getting lost. It’s back. The premise is that in this world there are people with special powers that often have something to do with the real literary individual they are named for. The main group of characters are a bunch of misfits who work at a detective agency, the Armed Detective Agency, and […]

Second One’s the Charm I guess

Mary Berry Foolproof Cooking by Mary Berry

February 28, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I mentioned in a previous review that my mother uncovered a stack or previously misplaced Christmas presents intended for Christmas 2018 and/or 2019. This stack comprised of about 5-6 cookbooks. Here now are my thoughts on the second book in the pile, Mary Berry: Foolproof Cooking. Going by the price sticker, this appears to have been on a clearance shelf like book 1 that I didn’t love, but this one deserves that a bit less. Basically, I might actually try some of these recipes. The […]

Social and Political with Murder Mystery in Fantasy Historical Setting with a Hint of Romance

The King's Beast vol. 1 by Rei Toma

February 21, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

This one is also something I decided on for Valentine’s Day, but I’m a little late in getting the review done; I saw a teaser chapter posted online and I figured why not? I did get the book a few days early and put it with the rest of the small Valentine’s stash I’d set up for myself. The King’s Beast is a manga series from a publisher that tends to focus a lot on drawn out romance type stories. The King’s Beast in spite […]

A Love Story Even a Non-Romance Person Can Fall For

Winter's Orbit by Everina Maxwell

February 20, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Romance is really not my genre; for one thing I’m very much ace and spent most of my growing up time wondering what was wrong with all the story people who apparently have no self-control with the lust and related emotional stuff. However, sometimes, there comes along a romance that has enough other elements, like actually interesting characters, plot, and/or setting, that I can appreciate the whole thing, romance focus or not. Winter’s Orbit is one of these kinds of stories. In some ways this […]

Mary Berry Food May Not Be For Me

Mary Berry Everyday by Mary Berry

February 14, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

So fair warning, this is a cookbook review but I have little intention of trying many of the recipes. As I was posting my notes on Goodreads, I glanced at the top review listed, and the reviewer made a point I absolutely agree with; to paraphrase, the title Mary Berry Everyday was slightly misleading in that quite a few of the recipes aren’t exactly everyday by a lot of contemporary standards, at least as defined by me. I’ve tried a lot of Mary Berry baking […]

An assassin is the murder solver; he didn’t do this one

The Perfect Assassin by K. A. Doore

February 13, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

So imagine that you’re a scholarly sort whose day job is being a historian, but you’ve also just passed your final test to join a professional family for assassins; you’ve done this both to learn but also for the sense of belonging. You’re actually kind of ok with the fact that your society has banned assassination contracts. Except that suddenly people are being murdered, your family will take the fall, unless you solve the murder. You’re probably going to have to kill someone along the […]
