Lots of Feelings Actually Works Out For Once

We Free the Stars by Hafsah Faizal

May 19, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

We Free the Stars is one of those sequels with which you really should do a re-read of the first book (We Hunt the Flame in this case) right before you pick up the second. There were a lot of characters brought back or brought up that I didn’t remember well from the first novel, and it took me a while to remember the details that would have helped their reappearance make more sense. We Free the Stars is a direct sequel that picks up […]

Magic and Alchemy at School

The Ancient Magus' Bride vol 13 by Kore Yamazaki

May 16, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

The Ancient Magus’ Bride might be one of my favorite anime/manga series that’s currently running. I like the basis in Celtic folklore and mythology with the addition of alchemy, a Japanese main character, and now a little more importance for a character who has had probably about 5 panels total in the previous 12 volumes. Volume 13 of the manga has some movement in both plot and world building for this newish College arc, where Chise is basically going to alchemist school, even though she’s […]

Something Old, Something New

The Obsidian Tower by Melissa Caruso

May 16, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

There are a lot of familiar things in The Obsidian Tower; it’s set in the same world as the author’s previous trilogy, but focuses on a completely different part of it; there’s a strong-willed female lead who is something of an outsider but has considerable power and ability from the start, but she’s got a much better sense of the world(s) around her than her counterpart in the previous series; there’s hints at various alliances, betrayals expected and not, possible friendship and romance, the possible […]

A Video Game with an Unbeatable Hero?

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime vol 15 by Fuse, Taiki Kawakami, Mitz Vah

May 9, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’m probably going to be on my manga review for a little while yet, while I recover from the Spring 2021 semester. Until then, here’s my review of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime vol. 15 (manga). As I’ve noted in reviews of previous volumes, this story seems to have a protagonist who cannot be defeated, only temporarily maybe a little slowed down. That has not changed; what has changed is something of a personality shift in Rimuru, the titular slime. In the […]

Light Fluff is Good Sometimes

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! Vol. 5 by Satoru Yamaguchi, Nami Hidaka

May 7, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

So certain times of year coincide with heavier professional workloads, and when that happens, I tend to gravitate towards much lighter reading, things like My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! (volume 5). This is a light novel series that has been turned into both a manga and an anime. The premise is that a high school girl obsessed with a certain kind of video game dies, and is reincarnated as the antagonist of her favorite dating video game. A bump […]

Komi is Learning but What about Everyone Else?

Komi Can't Communicate, vol. 11 by Tomohito Oda

May 2, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

My kind of mindless yet entertaining read has recently been the Komi Can’t Communicate manga. The interesting thing is that until now, this series told as a bunch of loosely connected mini-episodes has so far managed to stay interesting. It took until volume eleven for things to get a little shaky. I still like Komi, and she’s making steady progress as a character. She actually speaks a few complete sentences to different people here, out loud. The romance angle is obvious and a little pointless […]
