Fun with the Fire Force

Fire Force, Vol. 20 by Atsushi Ohkubo

May 30, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Fire Force is an entertaining but somewhat mindless adventure manga series; one of the good things about it is that it doesn’t always take itself too seriously. In a world where human spontaneous combustion is a real threat and most of the world fell apart during a “Great Cataclysm” fire some years before the action starts, Fire Soldiers of the Tokyo Empire are there to do standard fire-fighting but also fight “Infernals”, basically fire monsters that are the result of someone spontaneously combusting. Company 8 […]

After School Times to Pass On

After School Hanako-kun by Aidalro

May 30, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

After-School Hanako-kun feels a little like a bunch of pieces that might have been intended for the original main series but had to be cut for one reason or another. Several of the vignettes are probably supposed to be versions of standard high school manga/anime episodes like the beach day trip or main character catches a cold and has to stay out of things but is still somehow manages to be part of the story. In fairness, this collection is supposed to be a “behind […]

Two Gaming Nerds Go on a Road Trip and….

Conventionally Yours by Annabeth Albert

May 27, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’m not sure how Conventionally Yours ended up on my radar since I’m not a reader of romance novels generally speaking. Basically, it’s a queer romance with a twist on the standard enemies to lovers plot, namely the setting is serious card gaming and convention. On the one side, there’s Conrad the good-looking friendly guy who seems to have the perfect social life and image, but is actually dealing with major issues in his life. On the other side, there’s Alden, the seemingly uptight, prissy, […]

Chocolate Sugar Cookies Anyone?

A Good Bake by Melissa Weller, Carolynn Carreno

May 23, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

A baking book by someone who went to school for chemistry should be more interesting. I was hoping for more new stuff; instead mostly there’s a base recipe (sourdough, challah, croissant, etc) and some variations. Not to say there’s nothing here I’d try, rye in a pate sucree (basically a pie dough) sounds intriguing, as does carrot, currant, pecan loaf. The author is pretty open about their background as well as their preferences in terms of ingredients and equipment; the issue is for me that […]

Cooking my way through this one

East by Meera Sodha

May 23, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I have started to really make an effort to cook my way through a cookbook before looking for a new one; problem is, the cookbook I had planned to start the year with turns out to not be much to my taste. Library browse to the rescue, I think. I picked up East by Meera Sodha, which features both vegan and vegetarian which isn’t a mix you usually see. It focuses on Asia in general, but with a mix of Japanese, Indian, and Chinese cuisines […]

Familiar but Interesting

Deception by Gaslight by Kate Belli

May 23, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Deception by Gaslight is on the one hand very familiar, but on the other hand interesting. The familiar includes the journalist partnering with a mysterious aristocrat to solve a series of thefts that might be connected to some murders affecting mostly high society to which they both have connections while trying to decide if they’re attracted to each other or not, and trying to keep their own personal secrets. The setting is late 19th century NYC, both the ballrooms of high class social gatherings and […]
